DH and I took early retirement just as lockdown hit, we had planned it 12 months before. I used to work PT so had a lot of free time where I could go and do what I wanted to do. Before we retired we talked a lot about how we wanted it to be, which included time to do our own things, so we didn’t live in each other’s pockets. Seems my DH has forgotten this part as every time I go and do something he wants to come, unless it suits him not too. Think we need to have a gentle reminder about “me time”.xx

Definitely @amber03. I don’t want to be one of those women you see in M&S with their husband standing there with a shopping bag whilst they browse the rails. It was a fear of a friend when she retired but fortunately for her it’s worked out well as her husband has an allotment where he spends all day. She’s free to come and go as she pleases.

Mr SA doesn’t have any hobbies or anything he can concentrate on to do and is far too dependent on me. When I bring up the retirement subject he says he won’t be here in 5 years so there’s nothing for me to stress about.

We were in a lucky position to both retire in our 50’s, helped that we didn’t enjoy our jobs towards the end. I might have carried on for a bit if I enjoyed my job. DH was going to start playing golf again, use his bike more and meet his friends. So far most of his friends have had to stay in work due to the financial situation, bike rode about 3 times, with the following day letting me know how unfit he is and the golf clubs are still gathering dust in the garage.x

Are there any hobbies he would like to try, @Sun_Addict? Most hobbies usually come with a little bit of kit, don't they, & I know he likes getting new bits & pieces. It sounds like it's just what he needs, to have an interest of his own....maybe even one which involved meeting other people too?

It’s a difficult one @foxgloves, he’s a bit different to most with the brain damage and mobility issues. There have been many attempts to get him interested in something but it falls on deaf ears - or cloth ears as my mum would say to me when I wasn’t listening 😆 He can be a bit difficult in company and is prone to saying inappropriate and offensive things unfortunately.

I would just get up and go.  No reason why he should have to go with you.  You are entitled to your own space every now and then and best get him used to it now before you retire. If you have to leave a note to stop him pestering you on the phone just say you fancied a bus ride and as  his scooter won't go on them he will have to amuse himself.

My best idea is buy him a small treat from Amazon that will be delivered on the day BUT also tell him the truth - you need a little break and the pressie is to cheer him up as you know he doesn't like being left. If his arguing stops you leaving, do the leave early thing and explain on phone or in a note. I do think you need to start insisting but why not soften the blow a bit if you can.
