  • Tell him you have to go into work to cover a project - office folk do occasionally work Saturdays - I did.  Any purchases you can fob off with 'Oh I thought I'd do a little shopping on the way home...'. Of course the real annoyance here is that you have to make up these stories to begin with and can't have a few hours to yourself....😡
I think this is your best bet.. am not sure it would lead to moaning on his part about your job.

I love all the scooter related suggestions!
    Nevertheless she persisted.

    Thanks for the suggestions 😆

The plan so far is to get up early and just go. I often go for a walk first thing. Why shouldn’t I be able to just jump on a bus and go somewhere without him. This is what I’m dreading when I retire. He loves shopping and if he thinks he might be able to wangle a coffee or something new for himself he’d wait any amount of hours outside a changing room for me.

The trouble is Buffy is that he will moan at any idea that doesn't involve getting his own way......☹️

I’ve booked tomorrow off work 🥳

Also cashed out £8.78 from TCB. Forgot I had that as I don’t use TCB that often.

@dawnybabes the switch is in a covered small outdoor box which makes it difficult to find a timer to fit. I’m going to start checking before I go to bed. He can be very devious and likes to think he can pull the wool over my eyes, I always have to be one step ahead.

In terms of retirement, don't tell Mr SA when you do retire! Perhaps say you've cut your hours down?

In terms of Saturday, how about an emergency "ladies issue" medical appointment at a distant hospital?  But definitely ring his sister (?) and ask her to plan in a day or two a month to visit Mr SA / take Mr SA out for the day / bring Mr SA to her house?
What happened to the friend who sometimes took Mr SA out? Maybe invite him to dinner and steer the conversation towards something they used to enjoy doing together?
What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?

I’m not retiring for at least 5 years yet so not an immediate concern.

SIL has enough on her plate at the moment as BIL has bowel cancer and isn’t at all well. She doesn’t drive. The hospital thing won’t work he would definitely smell a rat plus he likes hospitals so would be desperate to accompany me.

It wasn’t a friend who took Mr SA out it was a carer he had for the first year or so after he came out of hospital.

@Sun_Addict, Couples don't have to do everything together, so I think I'd just get up early & head off. You can leave him a nice note saying you woke so early, you decided to take yourself off for a walk "& might even pop on the bus somewhere if I feel like it". If he complains about it when you get home, you can just stick to the truth, that he was still fast asleep & you fancied a change of scenery. If he keeps phoning you to see where you are so as to come & meet you.....well your phone can be in your handbag & you didn't hear it or you can answer it by saying it's not worth him scooting down as you're aiming for the next bus home (which you then miss, so have to get the next one). We do all sometimes need some 'me-time', do we not?
