kboss2010 and Living proof: Have you thought about making apple jelly? I did some recently with crab apples I'd collected (you don't need to peel or core the fruit either) and it's rather nice. Not quite as set as jam but still good as a topping for ice cream, pancakes, waffles, in yogurt etc.Nellbell21 wrote: »Hi folks, I hope you don’t mind me posting. I am a working mother/wife with two children. Our grocery bill is ridiculous and I have cupboards and full freezer. I am not a big food waster but I am a food hoarder. Two freezers full and cupboards bursting at seamsX
:hello: Welcome Nellbell21, stick with us and we'll help where we can.
I can see that as a working mother/wife you might be a bit time-poor, but you might find it helpful to make inventories of what you already have in stock (doesn't have to be anything fancy, lists on scrap paper would do) and then use those to meal plan for the week ahead. I'm sure you won't let your kids go hungry and, if they're old enough, maybe they could help you with the plans.
Bought 3 ys items today - a cauliflower for 75p (half for Sunday dinner, half for cauli cheese for the freezer), 2 leeks for 51p (one to make chicken & leek pies and the other for leek & potato soup) and a piece of Wensleydale with cranberries (lunchtimes with crackers). Really pleased with this one as it was reduced from £2.20 to just 55p.:) Used a 50p MOC against toilet rolls and also got a 25p MOC for milk so that will be used next week. All in all, a good shopping trip.
Glad to hear you're still with us Olliebeak1951 and that the Fake Feta hasn't "done away" with you!Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -
I got some beef cheeks YS yesterday. Have one in the SC with some shallots and carrots. It's been in there for 9 hours so far and the meat still isn't tender! I'm going to leave it another hour and check again. Have to say it was a very large cheek which I split in half as all the recipes I saw online said to cook them whole! Not so sure now. Think I'd be better off cutting them up into decent sized chunks which is what I'll do with the other cheek which I've put in the freezer.

Today I finally used the very last bit of this - and I'm STILL alive to tell the tale :j. I crumbled it up, put it into a sandwich with two slices of Gluten Free Bread and it made a rather delicious Toastie (using toaster pockets and the toaster). 17 days after it's 'Use By Date' :T.
Just FYI, you can freeze feta.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. So I kondoed my freezer yesterday & turns out I have a week’s worth of freezer leftovers so I’m going to have a no shop week this week & try to empty it somewhat.
I also need to stop buying ys food that I don’t normally use b/c I end up with half a freezer full of fish & ready-made gravy & never use it!“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. I've just emptied out my grocery cupboard and found a half empty tin of powdered milk from when we used to use the bread machine, it's not long out of date but it's gone quite solid, does anyone have any ideas for using it please?0

Just wanted to report the beef cheeks were finally cooked after 10 hours! Never cooked anything that long before. Will have them for dinner tonight with some cabbage & mash, along with the carrots & shallots from the SC.

I've been coping with just a little ice-box freezer above my fridge since February, and I finally caved and bought a proper full-sized chest one today. I can't wait to start stocking up on bargains and being able to batch cook more easily!0

HM Fish pie with green beans for 3 on Friday night & fish pie finished off by DH & I Saturday night. DSis had an sm quiche with chips.
I am gradually getting wiggle room in my freezers - took out a large portion of hm potato & Stilton soup for tomorrow’s lunch & prepped 2 more bags of croutons - so no bread wasted:T No idea what is for dinner tomorrow :rotfl:
