I’ve been gifted tons of apples from people’s trees recently so I’ve been making apple pies to fill my freezer.

I’ve also used up some pittas that haven’t been used in my lunches this week by grilling them in my griddle pan to go with some kebabs & houmous.

Using up random fridge/cupboard stuff by making breakfast cranachan-like thing with overnight oatmeal, yoghurt, frozen raspberries & melon.

I have enough store cupboard stuff to use up my lemons to make lemon drizzle cake this weekend & dates to make another batch of sticky toffee pudding to freeze.

I bought some reduced mint on Monday & I’ve been using it to make tea & add to yoghurt all week.

I too have this happy problem, although I feel I am all appled-out now. Just a few minutes ago I have put some apple leathers in the dehydrator and these I cooked first, blitzed with the skins on and spread out on the DH sheets. I just couldn't face peeling so many fruits, and I probably have enough already dried for pies etc. I have been adding stewed apple to my breakfast cereal and just a little milk as I think this is the only way I will be able to use it all up!

The website with the same name as this thread has something like that but for using up leftover cooked foods. Your DGS might find that helpful if he has cooked pasta etc leftover.

  • Hi folks, I hope you don’t mind me posting. I am a working mother/wife with two children. Our grocery bill is ridiculous and I have cupboards and full freezer. I am not a big food waster but I am a food hoarder. Two freezers full and cupboards bursting at seams. I need to learn to feed everyone from what I have and not immediately replace stuff they have eaten. Our food spend is about £800 a month and I would like to reduce it to £650 to start. I am going to join grocery challenge but your posts have gave me slot of insight in making do. I don’t like the idea of my kids going hungry and I think I pander to them a bit too much. However when we we were snowed in last winter, there wasn’t even s dent made in my stocks! X

............ use up a piece of 'Greek Style Salad Cheese' (Fake Feta ) - dated 'Use By 15.10.2018' ................ or would you consign it to the bin .

Thanks for all the positive advice on my question that I asked on 26th October ......................... decided to just 'go for it' :D.

Today I finally used the very last bit of this - and I'm STILL alive to tell the tale :j. I crumbled it up, put it into a sandwich with two slices of Gluten Free Bread and it made a rather delicious Toastie (using toaster pockets and the toaster). 17 days after it's 'Use By Date' :T.

Thank you Denise and Miro I have passed these on to him so hopefully he won't kill off his pals in Halls :)

NellBell21 welcome to our food friendly forum We will do our best to help you out . Sometimes its 'baby steps' that give you that 'light bulb' moment when you feel like your drowning in food stuff

I am... probably somewhat older than most on here, and consequently tend to be a wee bit of a hoarder, or as my children used to say "Mum the war is over and rationing's finished " :):)

But I always seem to have stuff in 'just in case' but I have been doing my best to mend my ways :) and get the food mountain reduced a bit

My problem often is that I am out for at least 2-3 nights a week so it takes me a lot longer to get through stuff.

But today looking at what I have still in stock I have decided that this month will definitely be an 'Eat it up, and stay away from the shops '
month as I really need to get on top of stuff so I can make room for some hopefully , bargains just after Christmas to get through the really cold months when it's harder for me to get out .Plus I usually end up with my two DDs left over odds and ends from Christmas and New Year

My freezer is getting roomier which is good ,but my tinned cupboards do need a good overhaul :) I think I have cornered the market in tinned tuna, pilchard, beans, both baked and almost every other sort as if I see a special offer I am tempted to by 'just in case ' :)

So today being the 2nd of the month instead or doing my first shop of the month (I usually do 2 a month at least) I am going for as many NSD (No Spend Days ) as I can manage and will literally buy only fresh stuff when I have run out of other options I have quite a bit of frozen veg in the freezer and more than enough fruit in tins in the cupboard for puddings I have a stash of UHT milk and I don't eat bread anyway so thats not a problem .

Fingers crossed my food stocks will reduce quite a bit this month ,although I know I am out next week on at least two night for evening meals so it will be a minimum of 5 nights dinners

Hopefully with all my pals on here I can ask 'Hmm what can I do with this 'and I know there are some pretty good inventive folk on here to give me a hand so tonight I shall have the breaded chicken I should have had on Wednesday with some mashed potato from the freezer and some green beans also from the freezer I was going to have salad, but its a bit chilly and I have some left-over ham in the fridge which I will use up tomorrow night for a meal.

My DGD brought me an apple pie yesterday that she had made so that will do for several nights pudding and I have some squirty cream in the fridge so that will top it off nicely
This month so far I will have 2 NSD under my belt and no intention at the moment to go anywhere near a shop for a few more days :):):)

Made lamb curry with the breast in the slow cooker yesterday - using up onions and pepper. I had it with left overs mashed potato/butternut squash. Today, we had the leftovers with ys pilau rice and ys samosas.
