We only moved to the island 18 years ago. We were both born in SE London but life was too busy there and we wanted a bit of peace and quiet for our retirement so moved here about 10 years before retirement. We live the opposite end of the island from Sheerness.

Do you know what? I think i've only been there half a dozen times in my entire life

Hello everybody, I hope you don't mind me joining in, I have already got some really good ideas and inspiration from this thread. I have just stopped working following maternity leave and so definitely need to keep an eye on food costs, and I know I already throw far too much away. There is me, my husband and our 9 month old daughter, E, so I cook almost everything from scratch as she eats the same as us. Just wanted to say hi as I always end up with odds and ends in my fridge so will be picking your collective brain regularly I think!

Feeling pleased with my efforts so far this week. Slow cooked a gammon on Wednesday and had some slices with cauliflower cheese (out of date M&S, donated my mother in law as she said she wouldn't get around to eating it) and red cabbage on Wednesday evening & ham sandwiches for lunch yesterday. Had a look through the fridge last nightand found half an out of date (but still fine!) tub of creme fraiche, a few soft potatoes and an onion. Had a look online and found a lovely looking recipe for a ham, leek and potato pie so also dug out half a block of frozen puff pastry. Needed to get a couple of leeks but that wasn't a problem - welive about a mile and a half walk away from a very good market (JackieO, your favourite one in the North West!) and E & I have a walk there and back on a Friday for our fruit and veg so picked a couple up. Managed to make a big pie for tea tonight (probably with leftovers for lunch tomorrow too) and two little ones for the freezer. Going to try and eat out of the freezer next week as it is the week before payday so this is a bonus!

I would taste a bit to see if it's edible. it probably is - and then eat it if so...

  • Thursday - sausages, mash, fried onions, peas & a very nice gravy

Friday - threw together a savoury mince meal with mash - mince from freezer, beef & ale paste from fridge, leftover gravy from last night, last tin of butter beans, used last of the mushrooms, shallots & cherry tomatoes & finished a bag of mixed veg from the freezer. Also used up all the potatoes & mashed with the last of the double cream (decadent mash :rotfl:) - scrummilicious
Mushroom peelings in the wormery & the rest of the peelings in the compost bin :T

    How was the feta, Olliebeak?

Today i got chilli sausages out of the freezer. OH had previously said to throw them away as he isn't keen on sausages from the butchers. to be fair, i'm not either but they are ok on a bbq only the bbq didn't happen. so i said that i would put them in a casserole - OH isn't here tonight so I'll make the casserole and freeze left overs for other times he isn't here - particularly as i don't like wasting any food, even if it's less than something i 100% love. Anyhow, there they were innocently defrosting on the side (together with some supermarket 90% meat ones he does like). "Oh" says OH "I could cook one of these each for brunch when I make it".

Brunch was lish "How was the sausage?" i asked
"Well it wouldn't be my first choice" he said - then i pointed out that it WAS his first choice as there were others there he likes more :rotfl:

men, eh? Anyhow, the casserole will now be 2 large chilli sausages and 3 lincolnshire ones and the less than ideal butchers sausages will be gone... I will add a couple of tins of beans (I have a can of black eyed beans that have been hanging around a while and i'll probably just add a tin of baked beans too) to bulk it out and have it with some kale and carrot that both need eating.

Welcome aboard MrsD18, I bet that's Bury Market I had such a brilliant time when I was up in Manchester last year. My nephew is a vicar in Tottington so I visited him as well. Fabulous market for wool and the fruit and veg stalls are amazing There is nothing like it down in the south of England I loved the oven-bottomed baps as well.

VJsmum I too am doing my best to use everything up to empty the freezer. I got some rhubarb out and that's going to be in a crumble this week.

Tonight's dinner is chilli chicken with left over cauliflower from last night and also some left over steamed new potatoes . I was reading a blog yesterday on the 'net and the young lady was writing about how she wanted to not spend any cash if possible during November, and had allowed herself £5.00 for food a day. !!!

I had to chuckle at some of the things she was 'depriving' herself of caffeine fixes at Costa's and several glasses of wine in the evening with friends She thought she could cut her monthly expenses by about £300.00
Some people live in a totally different world than the rest of us :):):)

Mind you she also had managed to scrounge a freebie 'scooter' type thing to use to get to work. Obviously she must work possibly nearish to central London as she said to walk to work there would take about 45 minutes so a grown-up scooter was a better bet to save on her oyster card :):):) bless her, wait till she has a couple of children and school shoes to buy then her coffee and wine will be a distant memory :):):)

Good job we are all different though On here we are probably more down to earth, and to me spending four quid on a fancy coffee would rankle ,but then I would just think how much food I could buy with it instead :):)

Isn't it odd how in the freezer when you are running it down you come across unexpected treasures.

Last night I found a forgotten small pack of asparagus (y/s) which went down very well with my also long forgotten steak that I found lurking behind some garlic bread slices :):) posh nosh for this old dear last night :) but all of it had been y/s anyway so I even had a small glass of vino to celebrate my finds :)

Have a great weekend chums and keep using up the left over bits I love how you can make a meal out of almost anything.

I'd have saved the asparagus until the morning and indulged in dipping into boiled eggs. Love to asparagus like that.

Your dinner last night sounds lovely. We had the last of the savoury mince from the freezer, the last of a bag of frozen mixed veg and some sweet potato mash to use up tne sweet potatoes which had seen better days.

Going to buy some mince next time I go shopping to make up another batch of savouy mince in the SC. So useful for lots of dishes.

Look and sniff test spring to mind. If it's not furry, it will probably be OK. :D

MaMade not done yet as I haven't got as many empty jars as I thought, so waiting on next door neighbour who said she has some I can have.

Meal plan done for next week with everything coming from what I already have in. It will do me a favour as (a) I won't need to go out shopping :) and (b) the ys bargains this week have been too good to ignore :o so I need to rein in the spends a bit.

Last night we had our usual Friday treat of battered haddock from the chippy with hm mushy peas. The fish was bigger than normal and we each left a small piece. Before LFHW I would probably have binned it, but not now. This morning I peeled off the batter (binned) and mashed the fish with a dollop of mayonnaise and some curry powder. It went down a treat at lunchtime spread on crackers and we finished off with a slice of ys angel cake. :):)

Hm prawn curry tonight and tomorrow will be corned beef hash (freezer stash) with swede, mash and hm mini yorkies. Much as I like summer foods, I always look forward to hearty winter meals. :):)

Have a good (LFHW) weekend all.
Be kind to others and to yourself too.
