Love food hate Waste Part two for 2018 :)

I've not had to actually throw anything away for over a week now, but realised there was a 'forgotten-about tub of SmartPrice Yoghurt' (bought to go with stewed fruit for 'HM Fruit Corners) at the back of the fridge
................. when I got it out to chuck, turned out to be 'Use By 28th Oct' - yay :j. As all the stewed fruit is frozen solid, I opened a whoopsied tin (dented not blown) of Del Monte Apricots (50p) - delicious dessert .
That'll see the yoghurt off before it's use-by-date!
Also used up the last of the mushrooms for lunch - with a slice of toast - sprinkled with Garlic Powder for extra oomph!

I nipped into Lidl yesterday early to buy a couple of items and get some cashback, and the Waste Not boxes were out at the front of the store. I simply couldn't resist and at £1.50 it is always worth a risk.
In the box were:
Container of cress
Punnet of Strawberries
Mis-shapen sweet potato
Large bunch of sweet grapes
20 large mushrooms
7 satsumas/clementines
7 bananas
2 lettuce
2 tomatoes
Packet of mint
Radishes
The bananas, strawberries and mushrooms were promptly dehydrated and I will use most of the salad tonight, as by all accounts we will be wanting soup for the foreseeable future with the cold weather expected. I will freeze the grapes as they make a lovely frozen snack and then eat everything else fresh. I wish all the supermarkets did this!Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Used up half a jar of White Lasagne Sauce with a chunk of Mature Cheese to have with GF Pasta for 'Penne Cheese' for me this evening.0

Wish my Lidl did the Waste Not boxes. I think they look to be really good value for money. That's a lot of fruit and veg for not much money. I don't get to Lidl very often as it's a 30 mile round trip and there's major roadworks going on in the area which have been ongoing for months and likely to be going on until at least the new year.

The great part about it was that almost all of the goods were perfect, especially the strawberries which I sliced and dried. I would say that they were the best of the year, but I don't know where they came from as there was no wrapper to the punnet. It's a matter of luck what you get in each box and very often there are none at all, or maybe full of something you have grown tons of, but the basic idea is absolutely brilliant. When I was in Scotland it was a 30 mile round trip to a Lidl but now I could walk although not carry a great big box of goodies.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Is that the Sittingbourne one , I too have cut back on going because of the major road works in the town its a 12 mile round trip for me as I am the Chatham side of Sittingbourne. I bet a lot of the shops in the town have been hit by the diversions there, shame really as its not only a nice shop (the boys love their chocolate bars ) but the town isn't bad for a change from Maidstone to shop.
Dd got the boys a treat tonight on our way back from Hatfield we had a naughty KFC as the traffic coming home was really bad and we got home quite late so I did no cooking tonight at all Just relaxing with a cuppa and a chocolate brownie that Mikey made and its delicious We took a box of cookies up to Jack at Uni and he just texted me to say how yummy they were he misses his home cooked cookies and biscuits:)

Yes Jackie, it's the Sittingbourne branch of Lidl. I'm on the island so it's a fair way to travel but if they did the veg boxes I'd definitely go a couple of times a month - it would be worth the hassle! Just hope the roadworks don't go on much longer, it's a nightmare. My DD lives the other side of Sittingbourne and it's difficult sometimes to get there as well, although there is a back way round to it but that's obviously much busier now as well.
DH and I like their chocolate too. DH likes the milk and I like the dark, and it's so cheap compared with other chocolate. Don't buy it often, maybe 2 or 3 times a year so I really enjoy it when I do eat it.

Their chocolate is preferred by my DGS instead of Cadburys and its brilliant when making millies cookies, I always stock up if I manage to get there OK. I would think the shopkeepers in Sittingbourne are really fed up with those roadworks now as they have caused major disruption for months now and with Christmas coming folk will shop elsewhere and another High Street will become a shuttered up road.Shame really,
I am going to dig and delve into my freezer over the weekend and see what treasures I can unearth:):) I have a feeling there are some nice bits of steak not eaten yetand I know I have some lovely rhubarb so crumbles look like they will be on the menu as well
No more food shopping for me to buy as I have more than enough to last until the start of a new month
Leek and tattie soup for lunch today and tomorrow I am making some celery soup for the coming week. Now winter is almost here I do enjy soups and stews and I have a good bit of stewing meat in the freezer as well. I know there are some frozen pittas in there so they will be toasted and used as croutons with my soups or as dips as I want to make some houmous over the weekend Cold weather always makes me feel invigorated to cook as it keeps the kitchen nice and warm as well as filling the fridge up:):)

joedenise - I don't think I realised that you are an island girl!! I was born and raised there - left when I was 19 (for uni) and never went back to live, but still have family and friends there. I was born and brought up for the first 9 years in Rushenden and proud to be a Rushenden girl... and we moved to Sheerness when i was 9 and my brother still lives in the same house we moved to then. Dad died last Christmas and i haven't been back since
I still have the Sheppey facebook group though so i know what's going on - the wildlife photographer page is amazing!
Am back on the 'empty the freezer' thing - haven't been on the thread for a while as we've been away. Trouble is, the freezers are now empty of proper meals and are full of 'bits'.. going to have to put some thought into how to use it all. To be fair, there's a lot of soft fruit in there from the summer so might have some 'soup and pud' suppers to use some of it.
I don't know where Lidl in Sittingbourne is? Though it is of little consequence as i live a long way from there now. Our Lidl doesn't do those veggie boxes eitherI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
We only moved to the island 18 years ago. We were both born in SE London but life was too busy there and we wanted a bit of peace and quiet for our retirement so moved here about 10 years before retirement. We live the opposite end of the island from Sheerness.
