Possibly yes. But on the first attempt to transfer monies out of the account it'll flag up the fact that you need a card reader, but don't appear to have one. So it asks you if you want one? So I guess you should say yes and order it.

Then maybe if you logout and then log back in again after ordering the reader, you may be able to try and use the reader that you already have!

I just tried my own advice and it didn't work. When I try to setup a new payee it wants me to order a card reader!
No need to guess. The question has been asked and answered several times on this thread already.

You have to order a reader from Natwest before online banking will allow you to activate one, and there is a delay of 2 to 3 days between ordering and the activation process being enabled.

  • I requested a switch for the 2nd Feb on the 15th Jan. Jsut checked the confirmation e-mail and it says 'we will contact you again when we start the switch 7 days before the switch date'. Heard nothing since 15th Jan... Have people who've had a sucessful switch been contacted 7 days before?

Not necessarily always the case. I ordered a card reader, and online banking allowed me to activate one less than five minutes later.
  • Wish i'd never tried to switch.

Yesterday the switch happened. They have put a stop on my account.

Apparently they suspect identity theft and put a note on my account on Tuesday.

After three hours on the phone yesterday they admitted they knew there was an issue on Tuesday and told me to go into branch today which i did, cancelling a trip to do so. I went with my passport.

My account is still locked as that team don't work weekends.

So i'm unable to pay bills, child maintenance etc.

They wouldn't give me emergency cash.

They are treating me like a criminal who has stolen an identity.

What i don't get is why they did the switch yesterday if there was a problem with my id and why they didn't tell me to take id into branch until i'd phoned them after my card was rejected. I'd submitted my id docs online and everything seemed fine.

    Shocking.
  • Oh dear, identity theft! And they still allowed the switch to go ahead. I would raise your concerns via a complaint especially because of the position it’s left you in. I did the switch last night and it didn’t accept my drivers license for ID with NatWest, then the page froze and took me back to the main screen, this is after I read confirmation of an account being set up. I rang them last night but the team were closed, rang today and they’ve confirmed an account has been created but that i need to sign something when I get the details in the post or a team will be in touch to send me a link to provide my drivers license electronically. Luckily the account I’ve switched has no direct debits on it and no funds are paid into it so it doesn’t affect me as much. Hope you get sorted ASAP!

No, they are treating you as a valued customer and trying to protect you from what they believe to be an attempt to steal your money/identity.

Unfortunately that is inconveniencing and frustrating, but better than putting your card into a cash machine and discovering that someone has stolen all your money. Hopefully you'll be able to get it all sorted out on Monday.

It is too late this time, but something you ought to think about is opening a second current account (with a different banking group) so you have a source of 'emergency money' if something goes wrong with your main account. This kind of problem can happen even if you aren't switching, and relying on one bank account these days is risky.

The other thing is to avoid switching your account on a Friday, and avoid doing so just before you have to pay bills / get paid.

In which case it sounds like NatWest's security procedures might have failed. You may want to give them a call to check that everything is ok.

Moan, complain and ask for compensation. I did and got over £50 from NW.
  • Natwest will block your account on a whim...i always record my phone calls with a free app from playstore.
Called Natwest and asked to transfer few hundred quid (less than £400 from memory) from my natwest account id held for the last eight years (had wages paid into and main account for direct debits etc so plenty of history) to my Metro bank, sent £250 via app previously.
All security questions answered and told the very snotty guy on phone id done a app transfer for £250.

Put on hold and snotty !!!! then came back and said "Ive locked your account, you cant withdraw or transfer funds until we can verify you as you failed security."

12 hours later get a phone call and same security and "Thanks you have passed security your account is now active again"...no apology or kiss my shiny !!!!.

So switched away...now switching back for the bonus and then will tell them to shove account the second the bonus hit my account...worst bank ever.
