I think what people have been doing is ordering a Natwest reader, then using another bank's card reader straight after.

I did order one yesterday, Tuesday, but got the response today and could not go any further.

Generic or not I don't have NatWest one yet, but have others, however when trying to move money out of NatWest I end up with a page saying:

This function requires additional security and you don't appear to have a card-reader yet.
Why not order a card-reader now? If you do you'll be able to use this function very soon.
When you've finished, call Telephone Banking or your branch and we'll do our best to help you until your card-reader arrives.

So would appear the account can't be used without NatWest card reader

Phoned the relevant dept this morning at 8am!- well, there wasn't a queue- seems that taking the form into the bank creates a grey area: paperwork may get forwarded to the team or a/c may be opened in branch... therefore no switch bonus!
 Flip, why did the letter even suggest going into a branch??

Managed to retrieve signed form from the branch and posted it......only wasted 2 days..........

They have to alter a setting to allow you to activate the card reader. That happens a couple of days after ordering the reader... but IME well before their card reader arrives. Give it a day or two..
  • You can move £250 per day out using the Nat West mobile app without debit card/card reader.

Actually I’ve found that I haven’t been able to move any money out of the account, even using the mobile app.

A screen comes up telling me that I’m unable to set up any new payees; in fairness to NatWest, perhaps I’m being a little premature, as we haven’t had the PIN or debit card yet.

Obviously, if this continues, I shall be on the phone to them pronto, but at the moment there’s no immediate rush, so I’m just letting things settle down for a few days first.
..........the bank systems seem to be making the process up as they go along.Lol

That seems to be the case! ;)

Try tomorrow then. Looks like there's a 48 hour delay (which would make sense).

There is a security delay which prevents a card reader being activated until a few days after one has been requested from NatWest.

So although other PINsentry readers work (Nationwide, Barclays etc) you have to order one from Natwest and then wait the required time.

That's why derrick has been getting the message he has.

My suspicions weren't misplaced then :(

It seems there are a number of traps in the application system - it either works fine straight away or else you get sent on various wild goose chases.

It almost certainly will. I had the same problem a while back with an existing account - the guy on the phone banking line couldn't have been more helpful. He set up the new payee (me), made a test payment, and then made the full payment when I confirmed the test payment had arrived... all in one phone call.

Tad confused.... My application for a Select Account on 12.1.18 went as easy as anything. All done and dusted in minutes. No request for me to upload any photo ID. Instantly given sort code and account number. Set up for online banking and the App in moments.
However, setting my OH up with a sole Select Account just after my application went through, a totally different experience.... Repeated requests to upload ID doc's to the Digi thing has been a nightmare. It accepted the driving licence and bank statement with big green ticks, then the following day asked to do them again as they weren't clear. So yesterday, he called into one of the NatWest branches armed with his Application No, driving licence and bank statement to be told they couldn't do them there and he'd have to call into another branch where they had Digi facilities. Cutting a long story short, he went to the other branch, queued for some time just to be told they were extremely busy and suggested he come back on Saturday!
    !!!!!!!
He waited for a member of staff to be free to take the copies needed of his ID, and left afterwards, with an assurance they would be forwarded overnight and hopefully dealt with this morning. Alas, this morning another request to upload his ID on the Digi-thing.
I just don't get it, though. My application went through easy-peasy, and I am a zero earner, with zilch income of my own and his, as our bread winner can't get out of the starting blocks.
