me and my OH both applied last night.
virtually the last page of the process gave us our sort code and account number.
everything seems to have gone smooth with online verification but in our case no emails what so ever, do these come later?

to answer my own question and for benefit of others.

we both applied last night for a select account and were accepted and sort code/acc number provided at signup.
got emails and texts at 10am today confirming account and switch is underway.
can login but no account showing yet, but it does say "it can take 2 business days".
  • I finally got email today asking me to upload copy of some identification. I can't really understand why as I was a NatWest customer for at least 45 years until 2014 so they have all my details! However, I then scanned my driving licence. What a nightmare. Too much glare! I then enhanced the photo. Still not acceptable. After 4 or 5 attempts I gave up and got my passport. Same thing! Too much glare.
A few efforts at enhancing the passport photo but still unsuccessful!
Back to Driving Licence and after enhancing a couple of attempts later one was accepted after wasting most of the morning and early afternoon! I then received an email saying my documents had arrived and further checks would take 3-5 days. An hour or so later I got another 2 emails telling me to get moving on my Personal Account. These were obviously from some of my attempts yesterday which I thought had failed! Another hour later and I received another email saying "Driving Licence: You may have uploaded a copy of the original documents, please re-upload the original versions. Please remember to take your picture straight on, in bright light and do not crop the image." Not a clue why my Driving Licence was rejected so back to my Passport and after this time it was accepted at the first attempt! A bit later 2 emails telling me that my documents had arrived successfully! I think I'm probably applying for 3 accounts to be opened at the moments!
Incidentally, if I still have my card reader from my old account will that do if I ever get this new account opened?

My passport has expired and I don't have a photocard driving licence - my paper one hasn't been updated since the last change of address over 20 years ago. I have not been asked for proof of ID when opening any other bank accounts (most recently for the YBS switch) but DigiDocs is being mentioned a lot with this offer. Do other banks or organisations use it routinely?

I'm in the same boat and the only option on the digidocs page, other than to upload photo ID, is to use the Natwest callback facility. There isn't an "I don't have any, what now?" button as I'd faintly hoped there might be.

So I got a call this morning but the person didn't really know. She said I could "probably" use last year's tax code if it was dated 2017 (although there seemed to be a bit of confusion on her part about the difference between a notice of coding and a letter, and between calendar years and tax years, and then between a document relating to the current tax year and a document issued during the current tax year, so I wasn't left feeling confident) and had a) the HMRC logo, b) my name and address and c) my NI number. After I'd explained to her what the three possible categories were on the digidocs site, she said that I should upload it under the heading "driving licence" and that this should be OK.

To be fair to her she did offer to stay on the line while I tried it, but since I hadn't even booted my computer or my phone up and wasn't sure where my tax code might be, I had to say no.

Unluckily for me, when I dug the info out of my files it turned out the last tax code I actually got through the post was issued in 2016 for 2016/17. This year's, as I now recall, was online only and not actually a document that you can print out, and a screen dump doesn't show the right information.

So now I'm back to where I started and not sure what next. Unfortunately it's not quite the right time of year for new government-esque things (e.g. council tax bill) to be issued so I can't even try to upload something like that instead and see what happens. There's no point, surely, in just uploading random documents from nearly a year ago just to see what happens. Or at least, I cannot be bothered trying.

It may be that I just can't open a bank account any more (until I renew my passport) and it's as simple as that. I'm not about to take time off work and queue up for an emergency passport just for £125. But if anybody does know what banks will accept, if anything, in the absence of photo ID then please clue me in!

The card reader has to be enabled/activated with your online banking account - if the new account means you end up with new online banking details (sounds like it will) then you will need to go through that activation process.

The bad news is you can only activate a card reader once you have requested one and waited two to three days - then you can enable your old one, but you'll still get a new one in the post.

    Have a look here: https://personal.natwest.com/personal/current-accounts/what-do-you-need-to-open-a-current-account/proof-of-id-we-can-accept.html

Re the tax coding notice, give HMRC a call and tell them you need a paper copy. They should send you one.
