And as a techie I'd be looking at that hard drive with powerful curiosity. In case they'd already stashed a series I yearned to catch but missed out on. (My car boot kindle had The Complete Shakespeare! I'd have given the dear lady a tenner for that alone, but to get it one a working kindle in a protective (if pink) case?! Yippee.) Hoping you find good things, or an intelligently wiped disk.

If they go home and go online and remove that Kindle from their account, presumably all the books stored on it will no longer be accessible?

As a non-techie, when I couldn't get any channels I did a google and a factory reset.  Which made no odds at all until I realised I'd got the aerial plugged in wrong.   *add embarrassed emoji here*.  I have an unfortunate tendency with technology to dive in head first without thinking things through first.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Sort of, they're still files stored on the kindle, so I backed it up, renamed it & carried on - and was able to load the complete Shakespeare onto other kindles. The upside of a kindle book is that when the music stops, they're files, & I can chivvy those.

Nothing wrong with doing an informed factory reset!

One can back up a kindle? I will look into this tomorrow, thankyou for telling me.
Absolutely you can - as with all ebook readers, they are very fancy USB sticks. When a son's kindle screen went wibble, he was peeved but I was able to copy all his reading (ahem, Warhammer pulp) to my pink cased one & got a big hug. Next I saw it the pink was shrouded in a tea towel - male dignity & all, but he was back engrossed reading. I sorted the kindle app on his tablet & fed it all the pulp too, then when he'd finished the book, handed over his tablet & repossessed the pink thing.
Android devices are pickier but when you've figured out where to stash the files (ah, Google!). it's all doable.
An Amazon purchase is usually both in their format and with some whacked out number rather than a nice clear name & title, but it can all be gently batted into something a human can appreciate & the kindle still use fine, just you lose the multiplatform, Amazon-know-what-page-you're-on, function.
