I love that your friend has expanded his life. The people we bought this house from were both widowed and confided that they were not married and had no intention of doing so, in order to protect their legacy and that of their former spouse to their children - I did recommend this to my Mum (now 91) each time she received at least two offers following my father's death but she was resistant along the lines of "what would x say" - a generational thing I think

    Thanks both :)

The "not married" when getting together lateish on in life is interesting - my mum's best friend (she's in her mid-90s now) from the time they were both evacuees in rural England, was widowed but afterwards lived with her partner for many years, without ever marrying him.  Her only child lived down in London so it's been his kids (adult kids!) who've helped her with things as she's got older, she's fully accepted into the family by all subsequent generations.  And they were Catholic too!  Which really, really mattered in Liverpool at the time :)  Sectarianism not quite as bad as Glasgow, but not far off.  I've never heard of another couple like them, though there must be a minority who did the same, they can't be completely unique.

I took the day off yesterday for little celebrations - early birthday meal with my sister at her house, she used a Delia recipe for mushroom risotto that was very successful :) JL were absolute stars, and delivered everything to her house, way ahead of when we thought they were going to, so I got everything ready - paper, sellotape, tags, it was brilliant.  And I can now legitimately replenish my stocks of Christmas cards, wrapping paper and tags, very happy with that, it was getting a bit boring  :D

Today, there's some washing to do, dw to ready, I want to finish the Christmas cards today, and then I'm going to clean the remaining shopping, and then the house.  RT's comment about cleaning the floor after cleaning all the shopping has stuck with me, because I don't    I'm not stressing about it - the "deadline" is the end of Sunday (or possibly the end of Monday, as I'll want to give myself a day off :) )  Hmmm, next Tuesday is green bin day, and I want some stuff in there.  Basically, I just need to do what I can - all of it adds to my quality of life and the maintenance of my property, so whatever I do is basically okay :)
