    St Dwynwen’s Day

Fall in love with St Dwynwen’s Day. It’s Wales' very own version of
St Valentine’s Day. Falling on January 25th , we exchange cards
and gifts, gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes over candlelit
dinners, take long walks on deserted beaches.

    Who was St Dwynwen?

A 4th-century Welsh princess who lived in what is now the Brecon
Beacons National Park. Dwynwen was unlucky in love, so she
became a nun and prayed that true lovers have better luck than
she did. We celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day – 25 January – in much
the same way as people mark St Valentine’s Day on 14 February.

How did she become the Welsh patron saint of lovers?

Dwynwen was the prettiest of King Brychan Brycheiniog’s 24
daughters. She fell in love with a local lad called Maelon Dafodrill,
but King Brychan had already arranged for her to marry another
prince. Maelon took the news badly, so the distraught Dwynwen
fled to the woods to weep, and begged God to help her >[Cont'd]...

    Irish Coffee Day

    e5f4b165d347fd13c9f3a5339239d3ba--irish-coffee-coffee-coffee.jpg

Meet Chef Joe Sheridan, Inventor of Irish Coffee

Joe Sheridan was born in 1909 in Castlederg, County Tyrone in
Northern Ireland. One of six sons, his family moved to Dublin after
the death of his father, where he worked in a restaurant. In 1943,
he applied for the job of chef at the airport in Foynes.

    Foynes and Irish Coffee

Sheridan’s rather concise application came in to Brendan O’Regan,
simply stating, “Dear Sir, I’m the man for the job. Yours sincerely,
    Joe Sheridan.”

O’Regan later said that it was the impudence of Sheridan’s
application that made him decide to arrange an interview. He hired
    Sheridan following their meeting.

While working for O’Regan, Chef Sheridan invented a new
beverage that quickly caught on and is well-known still today: Irish
coffee. Read more about the circumstances leading to its advent
on our Irish Coffee Centre page.

When Foynes closed in October 1945, Chef Sheridan and the rest
of the catering staff moved across the Shannon Estuary to the new
airport at Rineanna (now Shannon International Airport). There he
continued to serve his renowned Irish Coffee.

Horrid wet day here. Haven't had a walk today. Took car to go and see parents but they weren't in so visited my aunt instead.
Was sorting out the car insurance as we are getting a new car tomorrow.
Can't remember if I said before but we went car shopping on the 27th Dec and negotiated a good deal. We always have a bit of fun when negotiating- DH plays the nice guy and I refuse to budge on price. We acually went to see a demonstrator but getting new for same price.
Doesn't seem long since we got Frosty but she has over 40k miles now and nearly 3 and a half which would be ok if we didn't do so many miles.
    Quite excited now.
Giving up hope of a nice prize this month though!

Afternoon folks. Not quite so cold here today but it is damp. Fish pies made and ready to collect by DS. We are having dinner together as Dil and Gk's do not like tatties neeps and haggis but we do. Also he will not be home until after 6pm so kids will have had dinner by then. So saves hime microwaving his meal to heat it up. Have bought him a minature of malt whisky that he can have tonight when he gets home. He loves a good glass of rum normally (suppose its a navy thing) but at Christmas he showed me a rum he discovered and now is his choice and I had a taste it it is very nice. Used to buy him what is now his second fav for his birthday and it is very smooth does not give you a shiver or shaking your head. Have not yet won a thing this month but I am testing two shampoos and conditioners which with the first one I am really impressed my hair is not flying all over the place (my hair is half way down my back) next week is the other so we will see.

Enjoy your haggis rose. We haven't got any this year but DH will be having a malt later on. He is a big whisky lover. DS2 and DS3 like a rum, think it is because my dad does and used to give them one when they were younger.

If anyone is on here that is thinking of booking a Parkdean Resorts break there is a save £50 on Vouchercloud site. (EXTRA50) Just booked a Cornish trip with it and it worked no bother. Quite chuffed.

Happy Burns Night. Hope you enjoyed your dinner Rose.
    Thanks for links Alfie.

DH and I had a wonderful fish lunch out today. I don’t usually have a desert but we both ordered tiramisu. We have had wonderful tiramisu there before but this came in a glass dish, like ice cream. It was a deconstructed timasu far too much cream for me.

Sheils well done on your booking. We never made it to Cornwall after three rained out summer holidays with the children in Devon. August is not a good month in England. They often have comps for breaks in Cornwall on here.
Exciting getting a new car. Sounds as though you have a good bargain.
I keep meaning to say I was sorry to read about the death of Andrew Fairlie. Did your son work with him? Did you get to eat in his restaurant? Sad he has died so young reading about him he seemed very talented.
Don’t give up on a Jan win yet.

We have GS here tinight and he’s not in bed yet and it’s late. Story time.

    .

We have been to Cornwall before leanfun but over 12 years ago I think. We always had nice weather on our caravan holidays going there and Somerset and Devon at the beginning of July. Going back to same site near Newquay in June. My favourite place was Tintagel Castle when we last went there - the scenery is amazing. Lands End is in the frame this time as went to John O'Groats last year. I know it isn't supposed to be wonderful but want to tick it off as doubt we will make it to Cornwall again.

My son didn't work with Andrew Fairlie but knew him and was upset as he said he was a lovely guy.

Indie really smiling here reading your residents had a Burns Night in the afternoon. Wel, done to those who organised it. Hope you are able to have a bit of a rest over the weekend as well as catching up.

Sheils Cornwall in July sounds good, we were stuck with August holidays. Oddly enough we had better summer holidays in Scotland rather than the Devon.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. Be lucky
