Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I do this, but only because it's an electric shower and it doesn't take long to come back out at the right temperature (you don't have to stand under it while it's cold, you know!). I wouldn't have done it with my old attached-to-the-bath-taps one. Some things just aren't worth it.

there's saving money and there's being extreme. Next people will be drinking cold tea made from their own wee; you'll save more water and electricity

Somehow I don't think that's a fad that will catch on. Even if it DOES save money. :rotfl:

To be fair though, if it takes a minute or so to come back to temp, and you're not standing under it while it's cold, you might as well just leave it running for that minute or so you're sudsing up instead, right?

  • hmm....I do it. Oer these parts I don't pay for water... yet. DH already heats up the water for his shower I just use the bit left over from turning on the immersion for 15 min (shortest on our timer). I find that it works well for me - I don't wait for the water to heat up either. I just go for it - gets me up and out in the morning!

I don't do the Navy shower, because my shower is quite some distance from the combi (in the garage) so the re-warm time is a bit long. However, I do catch the initial cold water by holiding a bucket to the shower head. This full bucket is enough to water the greenhouse every day in the summer and is used to flush the loo in the winter. I'm on a water meter and this would have been money down the drain (pardon the pun).

I am also mindful of the hot water left in the pipe when the tap is turned off. In the kitchen and bathroom I turn off the hot tap before I have quite enough. I then turn the tap back on with only a quarter turn, not far enough to power up the combi though. This supplies the remaining hot water in the pipe, that has been paid for.

    This.

My shower doesn't take any time to warm up again, but I enjoy the heat when I'm sudsing up so why deny myself the pleasure?

Showers aren't just functional, they are therapeutic.

I view the practice as nonsense nonsense nonsense to be honest.

I don't, but I have a shower mixer, not an electric one, and would have to wait for the cooled water in the pipes to run out before the hot came in again - so might as well leave it running anyway.

But if anyone is happy to do this, or to collect the water to flush loos, water plants, etc, then why not? It's a matter of personal choice/preference/willingness to put the effort in and not something that should be criticised.

And if someone else views it as nonsense are they not allowed to say - particularly when the OP asked 'Anyone else do this?'

I wasn't criticising it, simply saying that for us, we'd still be using the extra water as it takes a minute or so for the water to heat up again.

Surely we have differing opinions without it turning into a riot.

    Lets hope so.

  • I've been doing this for years.

Mind you, stopping and starting the hot water supply in my bathroom is not compicated by getting a blast of cold water first,or any of the other hiccups others have mentioned.

My concern about standing under a shower of hot water for minutes on end is the sheer waste of water. For me,having a shower and washing my hair means having the water on for about 3 minutes maximum.
