To clean your hands after i.e. working on an oily car engine, wash them with washing up liquid with a tablespoon of granulated sugar added. Much cheaper than the brand-name hand cleansers.

Wipe a hot BBQ grill with half an onion before you start cooking to make cleaning it afterwards much easier.

Lay your dishcloth on top of the dirty stuff in the dishwasher and it will be cleaned at the same time.

If your fruit cake sags in the middle, dont despair, chop it up and serve with home made custard, delicious.

I love baby wipes, I carry them in my bag always, brilliant for wiping hot feet on a summers day, cheaper than buying foot spray too.

A teaspoon of cheap vegetable ooil and a tsp of granulated sugar rubbed together all over your hands is great for softening, removing flaky skin and stains - follow up with a slather of rich handcream for super soft hands.

You've just spent ages looking all over the house for something only to find it in the most unlikely of places. When you put it back, put it in the first place you looked.

Homes with a resident two-year-old will find this advice totally ineffective.

White vinegar dikuted with water and put in a garden spray bottle makes a brilliant glass and window cleaner and is suitable for many shiny surfaces. Even better with an e-cloth!

I save small drinks bottles. But a large bottle of dilute fruit juice then fill the small bottles , keep in the fridge and you always have handy sized drinks for the kids when in town shopping, cheaper than buying a new bottle everytime.
