Cereal bags are brilliant as freezer bags or for putting sandwiches in.

My dishwasher (engagement present) bleeps and flashes if we don't keep the rinse aid and salt trays filled. I then realised the tablets I was buying contained both. Now I just buy the detergent in a huge cheap box. It is miles cheaper.
  • If you want to make breadcrumbs for coating rather than for stuffings etc, make them in the usual way in a blender or processor, then spread them on a baking sheet, dry them in a cooling oven and process again, they are crisper, finer and easier to work with
  • If you are coating things in flour, egg and crumbs it can be a very messy job. The easiest way to work is to keep one hand clean to lift the finished article from the crumbs and onto a tray. That way you don't get crumbs on your eggy fingers (after 2 minutes they look like lollypops) and you can answer the phone with your clean hand
  • If you need just a few breadcrumbs to mix with cheese for the top of a dish you can grate a frozen crust (grating the bread side not the crust side). This is far easier than trying to use a fresh one
  • You can save lots of electricity, particularly in hot weather by not opening the fridge or freezer door until you know what it is that you are looking for - Mr A. Tycoon please take note.
  • A pastry brush is the perfect tool for shifting shreds of lemon rind from your grater
  • When you are icing a cake right down to the base, put the cake on a piece of baking parchment (for ease of moving it around from worktop to plate) up-turn a dinner plate and put the cake with it's paper on the plate's base, you will be able to turn the cake as needed. It helps if you can put the cake in the freezer for 30 mins, still on the paper before it goes on the final plate

I use lavender oil (5 drops to one of those plastic jugs for filling the iron) instead of ironing water to fragrance my clothes when I am ironing.

Baby oil makes a brilliant lubricant for shaving your legs - makes a very smooth shave and mosturises too. It also doubles up as a eye make up remover but beware if you wear contact lenses as it can leave your eyelashes slightly oily which can be transferred onto your lenses
