Too risky to share data without permission.Just look at the huge fines Facebook and Google (Youtube ) faced. It was billions of dollars to Facebook..I don t think anyone will have their hands full with data leakage personally with fines like that delivered.
There's a difference between sharing data and storage, retrieval & processing of data ... suggest you read the T&C's of everything you've ever signed up for & look for data usage clauses to see how many times you've effectively accepted collection, storage, processing & sharing terms which could be similar to what's being discussed ....
.... Free app to access meter data or act as a hub for appliance automation anyone??? .... wonder how that could be monetised? ... Dear X, your freezer was made 6 years ago and is therefore due for replacement soon, contact us for a good deal!!?? ... all data stored & processed by your energy supplier with consent given to pass details to 'selected partners' when you reply - must be worth something to someone!

A smart meter can t link the electric usage to individual appliances such as my TV or laptop .All the meter see s is the electricity usage overall which in itself has no real interest to anyone.
Do a search on "power signatures of home appliances" and consider the implications of your every habit being known by, eg, insurance companies, potential employers, and many many other organisations that will statistically categorise you, possibly wrongly, based on incomplete data.
Edit: two video links, first includes the second and puts things in context...

Bit 'tin-hat' brigade in the way it's presented, but data mining & creating multi-dimensional databases for onward differential analysis isn't exactly an unknown or even new approach ... it's been used as a form of converting data into meaningful information by all sorts of corporates and public sector organisations for decades, it's just the deriving value (revenue) part that's relatively new, and that simply comes down to two recent developments ... the vast increase in personal & consumer technology items with the ability to gather data and the current level of general apathy regarding personal responsibility for self .... effectively the "others should protect me, so why should I really be bothered, I'm simply too busy" approach which will eventually lead to considerable regret ... but hey, who really cares and takes the time to actually stop & think or even read the small print for just a few minutes!?

The new thing here are smart meters, the depth of info that can be derived from them and general ignorance of the ramifications. The current push for them plays on that ignorance. The ironic part is people will be paying (via higher bills and/or taxes) for themselves to be spied on in their own homes and exploited in ways they can't imagine or control.0

Utterly ludicrous comment , typical of the anti smart brigade who have invaded this board lately. They all appear to be the same person with multiple usernames.
. British Gas have had working smart meters in properties since 2008 . "New Thing " lol , Wake Up ! The only thing they have "spied on " is the numbers on the meters, saving occupants the time and trouble and keeping billing spot on..which is the main purpose of smart metering..( and hopefully reducing the vast amount of energy theft )..
Your laptop is safe ! They will not "spy ony our TV habits or what time you put the kettle on, not that that is of any interest ..
One of the "usernames " has actually added "as proof " a couple of flakey Youtube links originating in the USA..Do me a favour !0 -

Having a smart meter doesn't bother in the slightest.
What is really scary is people welcoming Alexa into their homes!1 -

British gas didn't know my smart meter wasn't charging for electicity or standing charge for ten day's until I raised a query and was intially told to read the meter not the in home display as this was the way to be sure and still took nearly another week for the data to be sent to the meter.I would hardly think of this as smart and don't see why I should be resposible for informing my supplier for a meter that is not functioning as it should.
There will probably be more publicity on how to make these meters more appealing to the wider public such as prime through the in home display free for a year garbage in the future when technology improves but for me the smart meter has done very little.0 -

Looking at my post count I'm not doing a very good job of invading anything :-) I'd say a better way to spot such people is to look for prolific posters who state opinions as fact while providing no evidence of anything, who go on the defensive when challenged by trying to make to make every issue personal and throwing unsubstantiated accusations around ;-)
