Smart Meters

A meter reader who doesn't know that an IHD is not the property of the householder and must not be disposed of (and shouldn't be thrown in a domestic bin anyway, it needs to be safely recycled)??
.
Not sure that is correct - a neighbour had an IHD which never worked "correctly". He approached the installing Company (Scottish Power) who wouldn't replace....when he asked them to take the defective IHD back ,they told him it was his property ,and his responsibility to dispose of!!1 -
By throwing the IHD in the bin, Houbara appears to be in breach of the British Gas supply terms and conditions:-
13.2 The smart meter and display unit both belong to us (or our agents).
13.3 The display unit is linked to the smart meter in your property. It won’t work with another smart meter.
So if you move house, you must leave the display unit behind.0 -
How can some energy suppliers legally install a smart meter when you choose the lowest tariff as no-one is supposed to have one if they don't want it? EON apparently insist on installation of a smart meter or you can NOT have the cheapest tariff. Please advise of the legality of this situation.0

E.On don't insist on installation of a smart meter AFAIK, customers "must agree to be contacted about having a smart meter fitted" on some tariffs. Not every dwelling can have a smart meter anyway.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I do not understand why so many object to companies installing Smart Meters ! They will not give you ingrowing toenails or much else . It will probably go dumb very soon ,that is if it communicated in the first place . It will just sit there and the Government will be happy knowing you have one which is nice . They will not be of much use except the red light on the IHD might spur you to realise you have left the oven on. The only downside will be that the size D battery in the gas meter will exhaust (from 7 years on) and cut off your gas supply . Your eventual replacement meter they will not bother to code onto the electricity meter so that will be the end of the functionality of the IHD so it will be best to stick it in the kitchen drawer if you have not done so already.0

Sorry, simply venting although a valid point I believe. I hav just moved to NPower & had the smart meter installations phone call. They confirmed, after me asking, they would install a version 1 and which we all know stops working if I go with another company.
What is the point. It is wasting everyone's time & more money further down the line. They are never going to hit the all houses installed & connected by the, now revised 2024 dates if they still install obsolete boxes. I said until they giv me smert 2 it's a no from me. If everyone followed suit they would soon get the message.0 -

No they wouldn't and in any case most SMETS1 meters should soon be able to be enrolled into the DCC, so if they install one that can then they've fulfilled their obligation to OFGEM and you should be able to get it adopted by another company in the future.
I've got a dumb smart meter which is on the list to get enrolled eventually, but I'm not losing sleep over it, nor do I feel a need to vent because it stopped being smart.
It still records my energy consumption and I still send in a reading once a month like I've been doing for the last 20 or so years and will probably still do until I'm convinced that I dont actually need to. I'll still read it every month and still keep my own records though.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Hello elcid1 and you don't have to agree to smart meters.
Victor2 is right. On our tariffs, like the Fix Online range, customers only agree to be contacted about smart meters as part of the T&Cs. The relevant section is 11.1 and says as below.
With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.
Customers can refuse these offers and stay on their chosen tariff.
Hope this explains elcid1.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, my issue is around when smart meters are fitted and the supplier has not added the correct MTC.
In attempting to switch, other suppliers will not touch me as they insist the MTC must be the correct one in order for the switching process to work.
Ive had the meter for 2yrs and in all that time the code is incorrect, my supplier is really dragging their heels since I told them I was switching, my meter is now dumb and i'm on a standrd tarriff in the interim period.
You dont get told all the frustrating issues around smart meters, so much for progress :mad:0 -
Do not agree to BULB smart meters!
They are faulty.
They won't auto-submit readings to bulb or talk to the home display.
Bulb will do nothing to put them right.
I am stuck with bulb. No-one else will want to take on their faulty smart meters.
So I can't switch to a cheaper supplier now.
I have to submit monthly readings but the displays are more difficult to read than the old meters.
Customer service are useless. Presumably they are fed up with this complaint, knowing that their company will do nothing. Yet it is so widespread.
Looking at other posts, the Ombudsman will do nothing to make them resolve the issue.0
