Smart Meters

  • After our smart electricity meter had been fitted it proved not to work because the phone signal is poor here. The fitter said it's nearly always the case in this area and that she could not then go on to fit a smart gas meter as well. She added that all her company could do was complain to ee who are contracted by the government to provide a signal for smart meters. Seems like a waste of everyone's time.

Have now had both my smart meters fitted in August 2019, no problems so far apart from my Gas meter reading started at 99999.

Meters supplied by Morrisons for E.ON ( Installer said they use Vodafone for their signal )
There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:

Interesting, I thought Telefonica were the only GSM supplier in use by DCC. Anyone know more?

Gas meter staring at 99999 is nt a problem, its normal to start at 99998 or 99999. Its to allow a smidgen of gas wastage in purging the system..You should be billed as a start read from 00000

The smart meter snoopers... already in homes as part of a little-known £20m plan to track energy habits

20 firms to share £20m to develop products to work alongside smart meters
One firm has boasted of being able to 'monetise' personalised consumer data
EDF is working with UK firm Onzo to link smart meters to Amazon Alexa devices

I ll be happy to "share my energy data "lol, with anyone if they like.Sharing energy data is just another way of letting someone know how many kwh s of electricity and gas I use.Everyone "shares their data " with an energy supplier.whatever type of meter they have.
I have outside gas and electric boxes which unless I securely lock the meter box doors any burglar can open the boxes to see If the electric meter is using little to indicate if the house is empty, so in my case my data is shared with anyone off the street who cares to look. It is of no use and no interest to anyone other than my energy supplier to bill me
A smart meter can t link the electric usage to individual appliances such as my TV or laptop .All the meter see s is the electricity usage overall which in itself has no real interest to anyone.
. Sharing my data on the internet with hundreds of private companies I use has been around for years and that is definitely "snooping " but I can t do anything about it if I want a free internet..Its the price I pay , I don t really care about the targeted adverts.
Samsung TV s now use targeted adverts on their smart TV hub bar on the right hand side of the TV every time someone switches their sets on..That is "snooping "
The worst the Alexa gimmick thing can do is indicate by a voice operated warning such as the IHD monitors do when something like the high using electric shower is on using 9000 watts showing a red display . big deal ! That useless gimmick won t last long once the novelty has worn off. All that would be is a voice operated IHD..
I would guess that 98% of IHD monitors are binned anyway after a few weeks use..mine was .
Once the IHD has informed occupants of their energy usage that is job done.No point in wasting a smidgen more keeping it plugged in for years.
EDF need to do a little research in how many people take notice of the IHD before blowing customers money on a short lived gimmick like Alexa

Thanks. It's encouraging that yours is working better.

My IHD is useless and I've not yet had a response from Bulb. They assured me that the meter was working .. but how do they know? They said it's not sending any readings!
    :-(

Had same problem with Co-op Energy SM2 IHD - it was showing usage of £10+ per day which for a solo user was ridiculous. Also assured SM2 sending correct data - which turned out to be correct as it was.

Have ditched the IHD - which rather negates the Gov's objective of user's seeing their energy usage and making savings.

Only pro is that don't have to read the meter anymore.

    Hi

If consolidated & anonymised there's probably little of an issue, but if not there's a huge and disproportionate advantage in collecting, storing, retrieval & processing of the information which can easily pigeonhole households within a multidimensional database data mining exercise, so potentially a massively valuable commodity to whoever holds the data, as a corporate with a valuable asset there'd be plenty of internal pressure to develop & sweat an income stream .... the ICO will have their hands full on this one when they finally wake up! ...

Too risky to share data without permission.Just look at the huge fines Facebook and Google (Youtube ) faced. It was billions of dollars to Facebook..I don t think anyone will have their hands full with data leakage personally with fines like that delivered.
  • So recently my supplier billed me for more than what my smart meter is saying? Very frustrating and I am not entirely sure what I should do, I have raised it with them but have heard nothing back as of yet!
