I had a Smart (?) Meter installed last week but the display showed that I'd spent £198 on gas when I'm all electric. Now I understand that the meter isn't even sending readings to Bulb! I wish I hadn't had it installed but I was told it was a second generation meter and so would be compatible with other suppliers if I ever changed.

Edit: In case anyone knows how I can check my meter it's a Landis Gyr "e470 type 5424". Thanks.

Does having a smart meter negate the need for getting meter reading verified by "industry third party" when you change suppliers, or is this only if your meter goes dumb?

Pretty sure an actual visual/physical check is still required from time to time with these regardless.

For some reason I keep thinking of the timeframe of five years but I could be mistaken.

I've had mine (last one) in for about 18 months now and no one has been to see it. The previous one I had for about a year and they came out once for a 'check'

I'd say they would still want to check it occasionally regardless of it retaining full comms for various reasons. :) But probably less often than a legacy meter, either credit or prepay types.

    Hi all,
I've having an SSE gas and electricity smart meter fitted in November. They assure me it's a 2nd generation - so hopefully I have a little bit of future-proofing.

When I tried to get a smart electricity meter about 12 months ago (different energy supplier) the engineer came round and said I didn't have enough space - the new smart meter was larger than my old (digital display) electricity meter. He tootled off, and I was left with my old meter.

6 hours of my life I will never get back....

So, can anyone advise on the size of either (both ideally!) of the SSE gas and electricity meters? I want to get my [non conducting :-) ] tape measure out to measure the space around by meter. I asked SSE and, unconvincingly, they said it was around 4-5 inches wide by 5-6 inches tall...?

    Thanks in advance
    Rufus.

    Is this a SMETS2 meter?

See Post 676, though it was Scottish Power who fitted it originally, now converted by Tonic.
  • I had my smart meter fitted by Bulb in June. A few teething problems but ok now I think. My biggest issue was with the IHD (home display). Kept crashing and not getting data acquisition. Several calls indicates this is a widespread issue with Bulb and possibly other Companies. Nobody seems sure where the fault is, whether it is hardware or a network problem. It has improved recently though. The bottom line though is since having it fitted I have saved a bit on electricity costs as I have identified a few sources (e.g my Desktop PC) that were using more power than expected and could be turned off.
It is a Smets2 meter and in theory should be transferable to other customers. But some of the smaller companies (e.g So Energy) have no support for Smart meters yet and even bigger ones like Igloo do not fully support them yet. Luckily Bulb are only just above my cheapest supplier so i can wait for a bit.

Thanks. It's encouraging that yours is working better.

My IHD is useless and I've not yet had a response from Bulb. They assured me that the meter was working .. but how do they know? They said it's not sending any readings!
