When I went to Uni no one had heard of duvets (in UK anyway) and it was good old fashioned wool blankets which, thankfully, they supplied. Only 2 each though:(. We had to supply our own sheets. I remember being so cold for most of my time there. I had a big, high-ceilinged room in a sort of turret , really atmospheric. The sash windows on 2 sides of it were really badly-fitting and draughty. There was just a tiny gas fire for heat which I could barely afford to 'feed' anyway. My Mum bought me a lovely eiderdown (remember them?) that first Christmas and all was well after that:j. I've always been one for feeling the cold:(0

I left my cold and drafty parents house, and went to stay in gloriously over heated victorian halls of residence. Magically my chilblains stopped overnight, and I was warm in the winter for the first time ever.
We had to clear our rooms over the holidays to qualify for reduced or no rent but that was 25 years ago and things may have changed.
Those lists in the papers of what you need are hilarious. I read one that suggested a capsule coffee machine was essential :rotfl:My mortgage free diary: +++ Divide by Cucumber Error. Please reinstall universe and reboot+++

DS3 is paying a bit extra so he can stay in his room over Christmas and Easter (his stuff anyway, I hope he comes home). We couldn't guarantee we could afford to collect him and his stuff and drop it all off again every holiday. It will cost £100 in petrol every time we visit him, but if he comes home by coach it will be around £30 return on the cheap one.
His uni residence will be a new build block of flats, so will be baking hot all year around if DS1's is anything to go by. DS1 wouldn't open his window because he had tall trees outside and swarms of flies would come in, so DH and I sweltered! Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

I went through the box and there is cutlery, a tin opener etc, saucepans, a frying pan, a mini pyrex dish with lid, a grater, three bowls, tea towels, etc. So he will just need a few side plates and dinner plates. I'll get him some extra socks and underwear and he said he'll buy himself some more clothes.
I feel a bit more cheerful today but tired. I put some photos of my mum in an album but that made me feel sad. So DH and I went to the local garden centre at lunch time to cheer me up. I had some vouchers so bought a standard box tree for the empty pot by the front door and we had coffee in the cafe. When I got home I put the plant in the pot and weeded the front garden. It looks really nice now.
I've also done two loads of laundry and put all the rubbish bags in the wheelie bin as it's finally been emptied. We've had six rubbish bags festering in the garden for two weeks.
My friend is coming for our monthly get together tomorrow afternoon so I have lots of tidying and cleaning to do in the morning. Which is good because it will stop me from brooding. Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

I hope you have a lovely afternoon with your friend:beer:
Don't feel guilty if you share a few laughs and enjoy yourselves. I know after we've lost someone very dear to us it seems wrong to feel happy but it's these little occasions of normality that see us through the bad times. Your lovely Mum wouldn't want your sadness to colour every minute of your life.0 -
