Hope you're ok. You've been really quiet x
Thanks Nicnak. I'm okay, it's just this horrible head cold is making me feel so exhausted

I had a good lunchtime and afternoon at school yesterday and tried not to do too much before I went. I felt exhausted when I got home though because of my horrible head cold
. I was convinced it was Thursday for part of the day too, for some reason .
Today I was in school all day and had a good day again, although I felt generally woolly headed because of my cold and feel an underlying exhaustion.
Still I kept going and I've been able to fill in another timesheet for my overtime. I'm also learning new skills all the time which is really great and will help me get a job here or elsewhere :T.
The only thing that worries me is that my age will go against me when I'm applying for jobs as I'll be 56 by the time I've finished my level 3. I feel 46 and I wish I was 46. I feel like I've got a lot to give and I've got no intention of retiring before I get to 67, but on paper my age will go against me
.
No money was spent by me today. That reminds me DH finished the vat return yesterday and we got our annual accounts back. We did a little better than last year, but neither of us earnt enough to pay tax. That may change next year when more of my school earnings are taken into account.
I hope everyone is having a good Thursday.

When I read about the number of staff exiting the education system I would think the powers that be would be only too pleased to hire someone mature, sensible, who loves children and is fully qualified! I wouldn't have thought you'd have to worry too much.
Good news on getting the tax done and I suppose it's a bit of a two edged sword but at least you don't have to fund a tax bill! I hope you're feeling a lot better this evening.

Your age shouldn't go against you, that's discrimination. I haven't got much of my mum's stuff, she used to foster children and when she died they took over clearing her house behind my back and a lot of the stuff I would've liked 'disappeared'. They were adults by this time by the way. Still I have my memories and no one can take those away.
Hope you're feeling better xxI get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)0 -
Stop worrying about your age. You are proving on a daily basis that you are useful, are going to turn up & do what is needed. More employers are keeping on "older" workers simply because they are more settled, have commitments they can't just shed overnight & don't have one of those weekends.0

Another one to agree about the age thing, please don't worry about it.
Hope you're on the mend now xx0 -
Hi HHD
I wouldn't worry about age either. A lot of our teachers at school were fairly young and we had a couple of NQT's as well. But I can't think of one TA who was under 40 and one much loved lady was in her early 60's.
I think life experience in general is as much a benefit in a classroom as the qualifications you obviously need. Plus you're probably getting more opportunity than most to build up your actual classroom experience. And don't forget the fact you're being paid to cover staff rather than just volunteering means you're officially working in a school :T
Hope you've enjoyed your Friday and are looking forward to a lovely weekend.0 -
I hope you are OK, HHOD, and that your head cold has totally gone or is no worse:)
I think your worries about your age being a deterrent to anyone employing you are groundless really. No one can say for sure exactly what any employer is looking for in an employee but your proven track-record in the job (both paid and unpaid) will have shown them that you are their type of staff member:j
Very many years ago I was on an interviewing panel where the standout candidate was a woman in her late 20s. Two of the interviewers were dead against appointing her because they felt she was in the age group where she might likely become pregnant and go off on maternity leave and maybe never return:rotfl:. They were looking for a long-term appointment. With older women tending to have children nowadays, into their 40s in some cases, that argument doesn't hold water any more. I don't know why I mentioned it in connection with your age, HHOD, as I expect you are past thinking about having more children;).
I've been asked myself when being interviewed whether I had any intentions of having children in the foreseeable future:eek:. They wouldn't be able to get away with that sort of question nowadays would they? Incidentally, when I picked up my career after my 4 children had all started primary school I was never asked again if I intended to have children. I guess they realised that 4 was enough:rotfl:
Have a relaxing weekend if you can find a bit of 'you' time amongst all that you will no doubt try to fit in to your two days off:beer:.0 -

FS: This reminds me that when I joined the Civil Service in 1970-s'thing-or-other one of the interviewers (all male) asked me if I supported Women's Lib !! I replied that if by Women's Lib he meant free contraception and abortion on demand, then I did.
To be honest, not only was his question unbelievable by today's standards, but I blench at the gall of my answer !
HH: hope you're feeling better and enjoying a reasonably relaxing weekend, though I have a horrid feeling that your idea of relaxation is much much busier and productive than mine !!1 -
HHOD, I have been involved in a lot of recruitment and we generally worked on would this person stay for 5 years. The answer for you is clearly yes.
The references to inappropriate questions in interviews, I would rather be asked at interview and turn the job down than not be asked, take it and find out I'm working for idiots. The one I took with that kind of idiot had no warning signs at interview! My mortgage free diary: +++ Divide by Cucumber Error. Please reinstall universe and reboot+++
