  • My dad would love me to live there and maybe welcome a 5th generation into the house. I have an inkling that my daughter will buy the house from me and move in , if I inherit the house . For one person it's too big more suited to a family .
Life is an adventure, never stop exploring.

  • I’m sure once the house is sold HHOD it maybe easier as you physically can’t go back and the memories and treasures of your mums will help you in difficult times.

Hope you feel better tomorrow and feel refreshed after a nights sleep.

. Mum had a beautiful winter bed full of bulbs & hellebores just outside her dining room french doors & I did find it comforting to plant one of my own, especially as I rescued some of Mum's hellebores to bring back with me.
I'm glad you were able to choose some nice momentoes. I'm sure your Mum would have liked to think you'd got them to treasure.

FG: I brought some snowdrops from my parent's house, and I love seeing them come up first in the New Year.

HH: yes, the things you incorporate into your own home are a lovely reminder of things parents used or enjoyed, a spoon, a chair, a lamp, a vase. In time, they stop making you feel sad, and just make you feel cherished by your loved ones.

Thank you Elizabeth :). Sometimes Mum's belongings give me comfort and sometimes they make me sad. I hope in time they will mainly give comfort.

  • I smiled when I read foxgloves' and Elizabeth's post where they mentioned bringing hellebores/snowdrops from their loved ones' gardens and planting them in their own. I did the same with a cutting of beautiful variegated ivy, more gold than green, that brightened up a wall in my parent's garden. Dad used to complain like mad about how rampant it was and was forever trying to tame it:rotfl:. It was a feature of my life since I was about 9:eek:. True to form the bit I planted has run amok here:eek: and brightens up a dull area. My spirits are lifted every time I catch a glimpse of it. My parents had a big garden with several 'rooms' as they were called and I also managed to dig up a few other plants which didn't spoil the look of the garden at all and prospective owners wouldn't have even noticed had gone. They certainly give me joy at every growing season and a sense of continuity.

I know you said you only have a small garden yourself but I'm sure you could find somewhere suitable for something living from your Mum's garden:)

I hope today will be a lot easier for you. Well done for taking everything in your stride yesterday especially when not feeling 100%

HH that does sound like some lovely memories from your Mum/Stepdad's house - I bet it will be a fantastically happy home for some new family to live in and love as those sorts of memories seep into the foundations of a home, I think. So all the wonderful memories that you have made will go forward to have a positive affect on the house's next family, and the best thing is that YOU still have the memories too.

I agree about the idea of you rescuing some plants from the garden if you can too. Even just something that could be planted into pots or troughs maybe?

Thanks FS :). I have a pocket handkerchief garden, a back yard really, but I would like to bring home some tulip bulbs in a blue pot that would remind me of Mum (if stepdad lets me).

Thanks EH :). I hope you're right about the memories. I think it was a very happy house on the whole. I would like to bring home a pot of daffodil bulbs to make me think of Mum (if stepdad doesn't want them for himself).
