Out of interest and to give the thread a bit more body how many hours are you getting and is the pay rate above national minimum wage which for over 25's I believe is £7.50 per hour.

Also how reliable is the work.

I'll only be doing a couple of evenings a week. It's £8 ph.

I won't be getting payslips so what proof can I give them? I'll be signing off in a few days. I've only just started the job.

Proof will be from your employer signing a wage form to show how much they are paying you or them providing you with payslips.

It varies, but I guess it would be about 4 or 5 hours per evening. So times that by 2 evenings and it's approx 8-10 hpw.

The very last thing I would be doing right now is signing off until you know you are going to get housing benefit.

You also wont get a stamp paid which you do when you are on JSA,

And it looks from the above that there's every chance that you'll be earning less than you get on JSA.

If you dont get payslips or dont do this as a self employed basis you'll struggle to get HB which means you'll be liable to pay full rent and council tax.

So the options I have are :

    * Ask them to give me payslips (although I'm not technically an employee because I don't have a contract)
    * Be self employed and invoice them for my time

I take it there is not some kind of earnings form that the council will give me ti fill in?

There is only an earnings form if you are self employed. It's illegal for an employer not to give a written statement of terms and conditions as far as I know.

There is always a contract between an employee and employer. You may not have anything in writing, but a contract will still exist. This is because your agreement to work for your employer and your employer's agreement to pay you for your work forms a contract.
