    Provider: MINT
    Amount Reclaimed: £805
    Amount they paid: £730
The story: Hardly any drama. Thought about it for ages then bit the bullet. Asked for my charges without sending the £10 - and got a letter within 6 days. Then last Friday I sent back the first template asking for charges and today I got the letter saying we'll offer you £730.09.

They have worked out the interest wrong, but for £75 I really am not going to argue. One CC paid off and £370 in my back pocket for 2 weeks work, one special delivery and one recorded delivery letter.

    RESULT

Thanks to everyone on here for giving me the courage to claim

    Phil

I have a Barclaycard account and want to see if I can claim any charges back. Did they threaten to close your account when you asked for the charges back or did they let you keep your account?

    TIA.

    Provider: Capital One
    Amount Reclaimed: £432.00
    Amount they paid: £373.00

The story: In mid November 2009 I wrote to Capital One requesting statements. They wrote back to me saying that I had not made out the cheque (for the £10 fee) correctly so I would need to amend it and return it. I wrote out an amended cheque and returned it to them only to have them write to me again saying that I had forgotten to sign the letter that I had sent, so I signed the letter and sent it back to them again. My statements finally arrived at the beginning of January 2010 and I added up the charges and the appropriate interest and wrote to Capital One asking for a total of £432.00 to be returned to me. On the 25th of January I received a letter back from Capital One saying they have looked at my case and they made me an offer of £9.15 (which represented the difference between a £20.00 charge and what they deemed to be a "fair" £12.00 charge), they also spouted some of the OFT rulings claiming all the charges were fair etc. So I wrote back to them refusing their (ridiculous) offer, stating that I did not agree with what they were saying and that I now planned to pursue my claim via the Financial Ombudsman and/or court proceedings. They swiftly wrote back to me stating they had re-assessed my case and were now prepared to offer me £373.00, which although it was not the full amount I asked for, I accepted as I believe this was a reasonable amount.

I advise anyone pursuing a claim with Capital One to persevere and not be put off by their run around methods or paltry offers. I'm happy with the result even though it took over 4 months.
  • Am I the only one to have problems with MBNA?
I followed the routine, sent letters asking for money back. They said NO, i sent another letter and they offered and credited £72 to my account. Sent another letter - no response!
Decided to go through FOS, they have been in touch to say that MBNA have refused to refund the whole amount and that they are awaiting an offer from MBNA.

Has anyone been through this, and what did they do??

I was sure I had paid off my account - but then I found out I was over £700 in debt to them. After adding it all up - these were all charges!
Many phone calls from Capital One - who at one point even told me on the phone that I was 'stupid with money'! I told them I did not owe this money and to stop harrassing me on the telephone. Which they didn't. I sent them the first letter with a breakdown of charges - they offered me £50 good will and said they did not owe me anything. I sent another letter and did not accept their £50... no awnser... more phone calls - then court action from them.
Then I phoned the financial ombudsman - who were very helpful indeed. They said it sounded like I had a case for them. I sent all the correspondance over and then waited. They kept me in touch with progress.
In the end - Capital One backed down - they paid off my card and sent me a cheque for the remainder!

  • PPI reclaim from Barclaycard: £19,990
    BOS: £9060
    Settled with Egg:£1000 (£2500) loan
    M&S: £1000 (£3999 loan)
    MBNA: £420 (£10,650)
    Total loan: £32000+
All paid off - thanks to PPI reclaim and BIG thanks to Martin!!!!
  • Provider: Egg
Amount Reclaimed: c£2500 in premiums + interest
Amount they paid: £2564.12 in premiums + £749.37 interest
The story: I've recently taken a permanent job that pays exactly half what my contracting (very lucrative but unstable with no long-term future) job paid. Because I've been trying to sort out some serious financial issues, I visited the moneysavingexpert site. I've seen Martin on GMTV regularly and he seemed like a reliable chap :)

Following the advice I read, I simply sent off the letter 1 template from the website, with the only reason included being that Egg had previously been fined for how they sold PPI on their credit cards. It took me a total of 5 minutes to edit the templates, save it, print it and put it in an envelope.

Within 10 days, I received a letter stating that Egg are going to refund all my premiums within the next 3 - 5 working days! And all for the price of a stamp.

I'd never have considered going down this line as I have no memory of how this was presented to me at the time of 'sale', and I no longer have the relevant paperwork. I simply read the site and thought it was worth having a go. I didn't even change the wording from the template very much.

    Many thanks to all :T

PS: I have 2 Egg credit cards and I sent the letter claiming refunds on both cards. In addition to the letter telling me how much was being refunded for one card's policy, I received a second letter from Egg pointing out all the reasons why the claim was being rejected for the second card (not least because I ticked a box to say I wanted the policy when I took it out, but like I said, there's no way I'd have remembered that).
  • Provider: Sainbury’s Credit Card
    Amount Reclaimed: £125 (5 x £25) plus compound interest.
Amount they paid: £180.09 (5 x £13 plus compound interest.
    The story:

A few weeks ago I wrote to Sainsbury’s Credit Card about 5 x £25 charges they had applied to my wife’s card back in 2005 and asked them to pay them back in full.

I also pointed out that although they claim to not charge interest on their charges this is only true if their customer is able to clear their account in full the following month. Where someone is unable to clear the full amount off their card, as in our case, they are able to carry on charging compound interest on the outstanding amount which is made £25 greater by virtue of the unfair charge – between 15.9% and 17.95% in 2005, 17.96% in 2006 and 2007, 23.95% in 2008 and 28.95% in 2009 and 2010.

A week later we got a reply from Sainsbury’s saying that they didn’t agree with the OFT ruling but as a good will gesture were prepared to refund the difference between £12 and £25 - £65 in full and final settlement.

I declined their offer and pointed out that I also disagreed with the OFT ruling as I felt that £12 in no way reflects their true costs which I believe to be much less than this.

I suggested that I might be prepared to accept a solution based on the difference between £12 and £25 if Sainsbury’s were prepared to demonstrate that £12 is a true reflection of their costs by letting me have a full breakdown.

In any case we still asked for the compound interest back as well.

In the post this morning we received a letter from Sainsbury’s declining to give us a breakdown of their costs on the grounds that this was “commercially sensitive information”.

That said, they did offer us the £65 PLUS compound interest up to this month - £180.09!
