Where to find glass jars?

When I use peanut butter jars for jam, I use jampot covers like foxgloves describes, but put the plastic lid back on as well when the jam is cold. That way I can stack jars if I need to, and when the jar is opened and in use, then I can use the lid and not fiddle about with the cellophane and elastic band. I have tried without the cellophane, but the top of the jam does go seriously mouldy after a few months, the plastic lids aren't airtight. If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0

I am going to have a go at making marmalade, jam and chutneys this year for next Christmas. Can anyone recommend where to buy jars and a preserving pan please?May Grocery Challenge £254.16/£3200

How about Freecycle :T If you need to buy, Ascott is a good site.
There's more for you in this thread; I'll merge this later to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Ive been making jams for years and have never 'bought' a jar, I just use any jar that has a well fitting lid.0

Ask friends and work colleagues to save you jars. We have a glass recycling box at work, so I re-recycle them into my own box and take them home.
I would ask on Freecycle sites for jam pan, or have a good look online - Amazon had some a while ago. Not sure what price they are though.0 -
http://www.jamjarshop.com/shop/department.asp?catid=45 The Jam Jar Shop are great. They also have some reasonable bulk buys in their sale department. Postage is individual, done by weight etc
Definately try ebay freecycle before anything else though!0 -
http://www.jamjarshop.com/shop/product.asp?catid=43&pid=394 Now THAT is a good price, ok ok not FREE, but compared to Lakeland etc, it is great. Actually considering getting some for storage!0

Save any jars that you have and ask friends and family for theirs. You may have to buy new tops as they wear out before the jars! Also, if they have been used for pickles and chutneys, then these tops can absorb flavours, so best not to use for jams etc.0

I was lucky enough to receive a fab jam pan when I asked on Freecycle about a year ago and have used it lots. I reuse glass jars and ask family to save theirs too. I then pop on a fabric cover in a festive print and a homemade for Christmas sticky label - sorted:hello:

I just use one of my everyday pans, as long as they are 'heavy' bottomed then they should be ok and as for the jam jars, I just wash out any jars from jam. pickles etc and store them in the cupboard then rewash and sterilise when I am ready to use them0
