  • Thank you for all the tips. I have used the promo code and bought jars to start me off from JamJar.co.uk. I have also joined our local freecycle.

Does anyone know if you can sell stuff you make? I was thinking about other halfs work. I make sweets and biscuits too so was thinking about making small hampers to order but wasn't sure about food hygiene laws etc

I've been looking at preserving jars in Lakeland - they stock Le Parfait and Kilner ones, and I know you can buy them elsewhere at cheaper prices too.

Is there anyone out there who is an expert on these sorts of jars and can give me a run down on the pros and cons of clip top jars vs screw on lids, separate rubber rings vs seals that are part of the inner lid (Kilner), and Kilner vs Le Parfait jars in general? Does one sort keep its seal longer than the other?

Initially I want to get some to store dry kitchen goods in temporarily (I'm sorting out the cupboards) but in the longer term I want to be able to use the jars for preserving, mostly bottled fruit but also smaller jars for jam. If I buy jars I want to know that I will still be using them in 20 years time! I assume new seals will still be available for both sorts then. :D

    Thanks

I use the old fashioned kilner jars with a screw on lid for all jams, bottled fruits and veg the cheapest place to get them plus the replacement seals is in Wilkinsons at the moment.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Also have a look at www.jamjarshop.com ... I got jam sized jars really cheaply - but I only use them for mustards and chutneys.....

recently i saw loads in my local tesco. all different sizes i think they were only £1 or £2 each, size depending. ALso my local poundland had some, but the hinge lid didn't look as strong as the tesco one.

as for proper kilner jars with the screw top orange lid, maybe try freecycle. my mum has loads of the proper old one and they just last forever it seem's.

Many thanks for the ideas of where to buy them. I'll shop around. Maybe I'll buy one of each sort and experiment.:D

Question for the Board, where do you get jars for your jellies / jams / chutneys and how much do you pay for them?

I’ve just been given 1.5kg of sloes, several kilos of crab apples and I’ve got at least 2 kilos of rosehips that’ll need to be harvested soon. :jI plan to make sloe gin (recipe from Sloe.biz) followed by sloe chocolates from the same site. The crab apples will go into hot crab apple jelly and then the pulp will be made into crab apple cheese (recipes from the Cottagesmallholder.com). And the rosehips will become rosehip jelly. That’s far too much for us to eat (we manage about 3 jars a year of jelly), so my plan is to give away jars full of goodies to friends/relatives.

I’ve got some Kilner jars, but they cost a bomb from Lakeland, so I want to keep them if at all possible and give away something cheaper. I’m kicking myself because we were in France two weekends ago and could have bought a dozen Le Parfait style jars for less than €10 in Carrefour.

(Sorry, as a newby I can't post links)
