poundland had kilner type jars surprise surprise fr a pound, put an add on freecycle you may get some there. i have used this company before for jars but it does make your jam a wee bit expensive but its the cheapest that i can find and know that their lids, which you can buy on their own, fit standard jars as well

If you have spare mugs, then use those.
You could also use drinking glasses, small glass bowls, whatever.
Charity shops will always have mugs, glasses or even pretty cups.
Indeed if you can heat up the mug/glass/cup and it has a smooth lip you can use it.
You then need to put a a circle of waxed paper on the top of the slightly cooled jam/jelly... I use the inner liner from cornflakes packet cut to a circle.
Then cover with a cellophane circle. I've been known to use cellophane from a bunch of flowers! Then put an elastic band on it.
Cover with pretty paper/scrap fabric.
Lovely present, not much outlay.0 -
Hi,
I suggest you ask family, friends and neighbours to save their recycling for you. Ask on freegle too. Once people know you are "into" making jam etc you will be inundated. Worst case scenario, you could buy some cheap condiments, eat the contents and then use the jars. The cheapest one and old favourite with OS jam making folk used to be tesco value mint sauce - more for chutneys I suppose, because you'll find it difficult to completely remove the vinegary smell. I'm not sure how cheap this is now, but still probably cheaper than buying brand new jars...Skint but happy with my lovely family

I bought 9p jars of curry sauce from asda for this. Didn't get round to making the jam though and I am not sure if they still sell so cheaply.0

I'd second purpleheather. Freegle is great. In our village we have a 'Jam Gang' who put a poster next to the glass recycling asking for jam jars requesting you to just leave them next to the container - they also put a request in the parish newsletter. You could try your parish noticeboard, or put a card in the post office/local shop.
I've got loads of jars, loads of sugar, but no fruit (yet)!"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
I have found jars cost quite a lot recently, one shop was charging over £1.00 a jar- you can buy a large jar of pasta sauce for cheaper than that and have the sauce for dinner! Putting an advert in the 'free cycle' type pages online/in local newspapers helps too. I often holiday in france and have never thought about looking for jars there, so thanks for the tip too PipneyJane!0

I have found this as well, sometimes cheaper to buy the value jam / sauce etc than buy new clean jarsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
An alternative to cutting discs from waxed paper is to cut them from a circle of greaseproof and dip them in brandy or vodka or whatever youu have. You only need a teaspoon or so of booze for loads of discs and they not only keep out air but add an extra preserving quality.0

Asda has kilner jars on offer for £1 at the moment.0

I was looking for a cheap source of smaller swing top bottles (250ml) for sloe gin and limoncello for pressies.
I know I could buy some juice in a small screw top bottle but prefer the swing tops if anyone can find them for less than £2.95!!!0
