Where to find glass jars?

Options
Hi there!

I want to make some chutney but I am struggling to find jars (we don't seem to use many jars at home!) I found Lakeland do a pack of 12, but I really only want 6 or so as I am a novice, and also I am reluctant to pay £3.95 p+p for less than £10 of stuff.

Any ideas please?

i'd be tempted to go to asda and buy a load of their mint sauce for 12p a jar! then even if you throw the sauce away 12p for a jar is a lot cheaper then from lakeland :)

Yeah, but the mint sauce jars are quite small aren't they:confused:
Could you not try the jars of cheap pasta sauce, remove the sauce and freeze it. The cheap pasta sauce in lidl is only about 29p or so x6 = £1.80, still cheaper than lakeland.

    Hi

Dunno if this would work for you, but DH went round to the neighbours and asked if they had any they were going to chuck in the recycling, and came back with 12 plus lids! I've also got them off freecycle, and my gran (thousands in her shed):D

    hth!

I always find the lids of jars that contained anything other than jam, tend to be impregnated with the aroma of whatever was in them- even after washing/soaking them- e.g. lids of pasta sauce smell garlicy/tomatoey, mint sauce smells minty/vinegary etc

how do you get rid of the smell? (I don't have a dishwasher by the way in case anyone suggest putting thru the DW)
  • Poet, have you tried steeping the lids in denture tablets, or maybe bicarb?? I haven't tried it, I have a dw, but that's what I do to the inside of flasks and teapots.

You can buy value denture tabs for about 15p. I use them for all sorts. I don't know about the bicarb, but I think I would make up a paste:confused:

Edit: forgot to say, keep the lids of the jars until you need to use them.

    Hi rosh,

If you only need six jars, then your best bet is probably to just ask family and friends if they have any they're going to throw out. These older threads might give you some more ideas:

  • I've asked at work and around friends, and people now won't stop giving me jars! It's great, especially since I can easily get through 6-8 at a time when making a batch of jam or chutney. They store well enough for when you need them too. After I've washed everything and put the jars in a cool oven, I boil the lids to make sure they're sterile too.
