Re the lids is it possible to put some clingfilm over the top of the jar before you put the lid on? That should stop most of the smell going through.Fluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!

I bought the 10p mint sauce from Tesco but like others have said had the smell issue with the lids so bought the cellophane/waxed lids (for jam) and lids (for chutney) from Lakeland. The lids worked out more expensive than the jars!!!
It might just be me but I think the smaller jars like the mint sauce are the perfect size for Christmas presents, I think they work out at 8oz a jar.0 -

Hi, What i do if i don't have any lids is, put the jam in the jar and then cut some grease proof paper into a circle to cover the top of the jam, place the g.p.paper ontop of the jam and then put some cling film or cellophane over the top of the jam jar, after that, i cut some pretty material into a slightly larger circle and place that over the cling proof paper which is ontop of the jar, then either tie the cloth with ribbon or some thin raffier tape around the jar top to keep the material etc in place. Failing that use a small elastic band instead of the tape or raffier tape. The jam will be fine, my mum used to finish her jars off like this. Sorry for rambling, it's getting a bit late and i have to make some Bolognaise sauce for tomorrow's dinner. Byeee.:D20p savers club

You can get 440g jars of curry sauce from Sainsburys for 4p (their basic range).
These are a decent size jar too.
Perhaps you could pour the curry into plastic freezer bags and freeze them.
Even if you don't like the curry and throw it away you will only be paying 24p for your 6 jars.0 -
I bought lids for standard jars from Lakeland many years ago, in packs of 12,
Still got some of them now. useful to have as we are usually short of some each year.It matters not if you try and fail, and fail and try again; But it matters much if you try and fail, and fail to try again.

I'm looking for some swing top bottles for making some little alcoholic presents at xmas.
The cheapest I can find is £2.95 for a 200ml bottle - does anyone know if this is a good price or not?
I only want about 5, and about 200/250ml size
Anyone know any good places?0 -

Thanks for the suggestions.
I just found another which has a slightly cheaper postage rate - obviously nowhere near as cheap as buying cheap jars from supermarket and reusing but not bad for new
