I would second freecycle - I got a whole load over the weekend when I asked on my local site.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

If you have no option but to buy jars, Wares of Knutsford seem quite reasonable and have a variety of shapes and sizes.

I would defo recommend Freecycle - had a load from them in the past, and have given away loads too.

Try putting a postcard in the window of your local post office, asking politely for empty jars with lids. I bet you'll get lots of little old ladies saving them for you, especially if you offer to collect them!

Any container that can be sterilised by heat can be used.
I've used mugs, pottery yoghurt pots, glass yoghurt pots, pottery cannisters (ie those for Tea,Coffee, sugar). Even ordinary glasses and wine glasses.

The essential is that the container has to be sterilised, the jam/chutney put in the pot. The top has to be sealed. Wax paper circles (from cereal packets) can be used so that the mixture does NOT touch the lid/covering.
The cover can be cellophane (even from a bunch of flowers) and tightened round the rim with an elastic band.

Add a fancy paper cover or fabric cover and a home-made label.. voila... personalised present for not a lot of money.

If you check the local Supermarket. the 'Basic' ranges are very cheap, sometimes less than 10p for a jar of sauce. It is worth buying them for cheapness of the jars.

Thanks for all the responses. Had a look on ebay and thought they seemed quite pricey and now am certainly not paying those prices x
