Anyone had issues getting a witness to sign contract?

I have a willing witness who is rarely in, another who is always in and scared to sign and everyone I actually know WFH miles and miles away in lockdown  :/
I signed mine in the solicitors office.... They've stayed open throughout. Is that an option?
Good idea but sadly the solicitors' offices are in central London. I would go to the office if it didn't mean taking public transport. Had COVID twice, no thanks again.

Now WFH permanently from the shires in a small town and don't really know anyone here; sort of know only 2 neighbours, 1 of whom is really freaked out about implications of signing as a witness and the other is never in but happy to!

Friends and family all live at least 50 miles away :( argh! Hoped to get it in the post by 17:00 today *cries*

Which shire are you in? I'm in Stevenage in Herts, happy to help if I can/am close enough?
Wow, thanks! I will try to get neighbour Mr Catch Me if You Can this afternoon, he has texted back an hour ago to say "whenever I am free" but he is not in!!! So I've given him 3 times today I can pop by before 17:00 today.... If not, I will message you as not too far in Welwyn Garden City! As a last resort....

    Appreciate it!
Sure, no problem. Happy to help a fellow mover. It's stressful enough without all this extra difficulty.

Oh that's a nightmare! I'm very lucky all the solicitors in my town are within walking distance of my house and each other... Great for chasing up things!

    Hope you get sorted
  • Had a text off the person we're buying from, talking dates - very exciting!  The last purchase collapsed before Christmas, and offered on this one in early Jan - this time round has been far easier.  Hoping now for the end of Feb, all being well!
  • Anyone else all ready to exchange but the conveyancing firm won’t do it now as they have a very big queue? We have to wait six days to exchange.
I have no influence on anything now, they don’t answer the buyer’s calls so now I am just waiting and hoping they actually do it on the date they say they will. It’s frustrating as once we exchange I have so much to sort out but cannot do it until that point....!

Can you get one of the agents that are involved in the chain to do the chasing? If they've said they can't do it for 6 days, that's frustrating but very specific, so perhaps you are firmly written in to their schedule for that day. Leading up to our exchange has just been phrases like "as soon as possible", "when we are able", and "we will endeavour to be ready by..."
  • Just need to report our renegotiated price to the lender then should be all done.

Anybody have experience of how long that takes?

Exchange made it all the way to the top of the chain in 3 hours. It's now been stuck with the people at the top for 2 hours. These solicitors are the ones that held everything up for 3 months. I never really thought that the exchange might still fail if these guys are useless.

Me and my partner had the same issue. Like a lot of people here we can't see each other during lockdown + all our friends are miles away + solicitors in London.

In the end I had to do my bit with a neighbour whome I had never met before and then posted it to my bf.
