KonMari 2017 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Just managed to poke my finger through the lacy trim on my nightdress - have decided not to mend it as I didn't particularly like it - it can go in the ragbag.
Grunnie - what a shame. I can understand the reasons though as 60 years ago these items would have been so expensive to replace so were kept for best and often 'too good' to come out at all! I know my mother was guilty of this too.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
I remember `kept for best` too, starting with the one everyday dress and the one for best, to be handed down. Its a very difficult mindset to break and of course, most homes were far bigger then, storage not such a problem. People my age are just about coping with the change but it must be so hard for older people
Personally I still have too much but a lot is to do with various craftings and while I can, then I will keep. I am hoping that grandchildren will want some wonderful equipment later in life. So that is it again, reminds me of all the stuff that was parked in a loft for the children, was never wanted so ended up given away to all and sundry passing by. I can see that happening again0 -
Keeping for best and keeping to mend are things which run very true with my mum. It was heartbreaking what had gone beyond any repair when I was helping her move, but I couldn't persuade her to give up on a down duvet which was damaged by my dad before I was born (over 40 years ago!) it comes from loft to loft with her, it just seems likes a lot of bitterness to carry with her, which I have suggested will release the angst, but she is not ready yet!
I managed to kondo a pair of shoes which I kept at work. I wore them the other day and they are lovely and make me smile, but they are too tight now (do feet change size with age?) so I brought them home to leave the building and they will head out to recycling at the weekend, and another pair from home will go to the office (I commute in trainers and then change to heels when in the office).
Asbestos is being removed from the new house today, so we can get back on with renovations next week.
Have a positive day xx£400,000 starting Jan 2020 current end date Aug 2041 I would love the end date to be 2027 but will aim first for 2037.
1% target £4000 so far £20 paid0 -
I own up to another horrible tossing and turning night`s sleep. Yes I was very cosy and watched a film while sitting in bed, I think the sitting affected my lower back and joints and I also deep down believe that the tv has to go out from there. So today I am lifting it down as well as the dvd player and they will not be going out but I have ordered padded bags for them, to make them less conspicuous when I store them in my craft room. Imagine two large solid oak chests of drawers on one side of the room and the two side by side beds on the other, opposite the chests. I am seriously contemplating swapping their positions around. Luckily the beds are on castors and I can take drawers out to move. I am going to think on this for a while, the bed I sleep in is in the so-called death position. I need to do some measurements first0
-
Much progress this morning, the bed I sleep in was only overlapping the death position, bad chi position, by a few inches, so both beds have been pushed further to the side and now it misses me altogether. I have been bottoming that room, took down the chi-blocking tv and dvd player, cleared dust. Both positions, SE and NE tweaked in that room have allowed chi to flow. . Those corners are wood and earth. lots of wood there so I have enhanced earth by placing a bit of `fire` in the NE position, standing on the wooden chest of drawers. Done with a nice earthy-looking and creams, round ceramic based lamp. So far it looks very nice and calming, tested it all with the light blocking curtains shut and it seems to have done the trick. I will be opening the window again later for a good blow through
While bed moving, I took out all plugs behind the bed, except one bedside lamp. Radio is chargeable and can be charged elsewhere. 2 1/2 years ago, I took a saw and opened up a rectangle behind one chest of drawers, specifically so I could put plugs into sockets behind for the tv and dvd.
So I need to re-visit where I put jewellery and a metal ornament, sitting on my bed. After lunch and a rest as I am cream crackered and need to think and decide0 -
Kittie - I did toy a bit with Feng Shui a few years ago but there were a few things I could not change. I did tweak where I could - not sure about the 'death position' for beds - due to room layouts all of ours are on the north wall with feet towards the south and cannot be turned another way ('spose DH & I could have bunk beds lol) I don't have any electronic equipment in our bedroom save for a clock/alarm and there are a few photos of the pair of us together at various functions. I do think that clearing junk/toot/dumping grounds makes for a more relaxed frame of mind which improves energy flows and it really doesn't need Feng Shui to point that out!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

silvasava, DP is directly opposite the bedroom door, whatever compass position the bed is in. Best to think of small chi when doing rooms, doing the house as one entity is quite difficult. Feng shui makes so much sense to me and eg I cannot bear the idea of heavy dark beams, so am avoiding looking at all old cottages. I don`t need a compass in this house but have a new one ready in the car
I carry on tweaking and have put two extensions and a multi socket away. The nice metal object, male and female swirling dolphins, have just gone onto the north facing window cill on my half landing and they are much better there.. I have replaced the first ever wood carving that I did, I think it is time for that to leave altogether as I have moved on in many ways. I have completely emptied a bedside table drawer, a middle drawer and need to go up and sort out the other 5 small drawers, 3 on each side. Should be quite a nice job as the room already feels more relaxing and I will put the radio on
I think the main bedroom is a very difficult room to do, to get right0 -
All beds except mine and DH are on the door wall - wouldn't you know - ours faces the door and there's nowhere else to move it to. Am I right in saying you shouldn't be able to see yourself in a mirror from your bed too?? I can't see me but DH can see himself lol. Maybe I should get some life insurance for him.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

The DP was bad in my case as my husband slept in that position. If I could not have moved the beds more to the side then I would have placed some sort of screen in front of the door and in my solo case, a simple door curtain would have done, to draw over when I go to bed but thankfully, I am sorted
Its not easy to fit in with what a house offers
I have finished the bedroom and it certainly does look much calmer and restful. The landing is the opposite as it is now messy but I will sort it tomorrow.
I just need to try and get rid of my aches before bed or it is going to be a long night0 -
Crkey - that is an interesting read, Kittie but I don't think I'm really into Feng shui.
I completely agree that having a bedroom free from clutter and with empty spaces makes for a more calming and restful environment. I've always refused to have a tv in the bedroom, and I don't use the iPad or phone in there either unless it's exceptional, eg I'm ill in bed. I think it's much better to have a break from screens of all sorts before going to sleep.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0
