I have spent all afternoon putting plants in the big pot and I filled it with bulbs and then the plants. I did the same with two window boxes. Half an hour after I finished and cleaned up it had all gone. I'm worn out for nothing.

When I managed allotments, I would stroll around and disconnect hosepipes....in the end, all taps were replaced with autofilling troughs...paid for very quickly by the savings, and a contribution from the local council green budget.
That sounds an excellent idea . Sadly we lost all parks and gardens employees here . A sad day but willing volunteers are doing an amazing job . Lovely perennials have replaced the annual bedding . bulbs and flowering shrubs give year round interest and on a lot less money than the past . Some of those who lost their jobs often after years of loyal service are still doing the job for free sadly .

I was a very active member of the green party in the 80s , we came to the conclusion that the green budget was similar to unicorns . You really want to believe but it never appears . Glad you got to see it in action .

Do you mean stolen NM ? If so I can't imagine how you must feel after all that time and effort and how it will have taken it out of you planting in this heat . Just a gentle hug to you . Meanwhile I shall think through all my mums Irish curses and send a fitting one to whatever low life did it .

I had a fairy door in my garden and it was just a tiny door to interest the grandchildren, I also had a door mat and four milk bottles. You see, m not always disreputable.
Well there's posh Hester , a doormat and milk bottles indeed .
I got very confused with the CHS thing the other day . It took a day to realise the sardines and water were for the cat not himself . Well you never know on this fence .

nm, that is awful! All that work and someone swipes the lot. Such a shame as everybody would have enjoyed the flowers when they bloomed.

I have never forgotten 1976 and the measures we had to take then have stayed with me ever since. Washing up water still feeds the pots, and my teeth are never cleaned under running water. I well remember someone on television demonstrating how to have an all over wash with a bucket of water and a large sponge while standing in a washing up bowl. Hardly news to those of us used to camping.

Thames water attempted to put in a water meter when I lived in the cottage and were not amused when they couldn't because we had a shared supply. They should have asked first. They left a leak that got progressively worse. Every so often, when I made a fuss a couple of men in a van would arrive, examine the leak, suck their teeth and shake their heads and leave, because it was our problem, we must have caused it, it was a natural spring.........
Eventually I wrote a stinking letter promising that if there was a suspicion of a hosepipe ban I would be inviting local dignitaries, our MP, and local and national press to come and see the gallons of water running down the lane and across next doors farmyard as it had been for nearly a year.
Within 48 hours a van arrived, the source of the leak was proved to be 2 pipes that hadn't been properly matched or joined. Job done.

This must be happening all over the place.

    I want a fairy door.

Softstuff ooh or one like the Dwarves in LOTR, that needs a secret code to open ;)

haha, why not. Even hubby didn't seem inclined to stop me though, and he usually would :rotfl:

And Hester, I imagine your fairy people kept the curtains drawn and the door locked. "If the tree's a rockin' don't come knockin"

    Gone Nursemaggie??

Here water goes from being prolific to like gold dust. We're currently in a wet cycle, so for a few years water will be no problem. Then we'll hit a dry cycle and we'll be struggling to keep anything alive in the garden.

  • Another day, another scorcher and Wimbledon starts too so I shall scuttle about while it's cool enough to do housework, pack a few kitchen boxes with the back door open when it warms up beyond comfortable, take myself off for a walk after lunch and then come back and watch a few first round matches with a nice cup of tea. We were both able to get a decent amount of sleep last night despite it being 'sauna like' upstairs yesterday evening even with all the windows wide. Today looks fractionally cooler on the forecast but all the plots are desiccated and many of the crops even with watering are struggling to produce except the courgettes which are giving half a dozen every day from 4 plants. Must make the most of a summer that is a summer and not complain too much but it's horrid when the humidity rises and just plain uncomfortable isn't it?

    Morning all,

Breakfast and chores finished and I've just come back from a jog. I'll have to head into work shortly for some meetings.

I must confess that I come alive in this weather. I start to despair a bit if we don't have a couple of weeks of sun but of course the water shortage and fires now have me worried. This house works particularly well in the heat as the bedroom faces East-ish. Curtains at the front of the house remain shut until early evening and then I go around and open the windows on that side of the house. Curtains on the other side get shut as does the bedroom door. The bedroom ends up significantly cooler than everywhere else that way, but if the orientation were reversed I think we'd find it difficult to sleep.

Polly both OH and I had a good poke around back in February or March when we first noticed the leaking pipe but there was nothing we could do. It would probably be me anyway, OH is very good at making appointments and sorting insurance quotes and the like but I'm the handywoman. Sometimes he steps in where I'm not strong enough but he has to be told exactly what to do. It works well because I hate using the telephone :rotfl:

Nursemaggie I'm so sorry the planter went missing.

Hester, a milk bottle and welcome mat? Very nice...I still don't believe you're anything but disreputable though ;)

OH finishes school later this week and my leave starts Friday--I'm so ready for it but also feel a bit daunted by what will await me when I go back to work. I'll manage. We want to plan a couple of days up near York and are thinking of staying in Ripon. OH just wants to see if the cat sitter is free before I look about for reasonable bed and breakfasts.

Right, I must get back to getting ready. Hugs to all who need them.x
