I have just evicted a bee from the kitchen. Using a plastic jug and a piece of paper to safely trap her and put her outside. For the fourth time. I think it's the same one keeps coming back; does anyone know Bee-language for "stay the Hel out of my kitchen"?

if you'd like to come over and remove the hornet from my stove that would be fabulous LW :) I heard a funny noise, opened the door saw something GIGANTIC covered in ash (I've been burning smokeless recently) and shut the door and the vents pretty swiftly. I'm guessing it's a queen looking for somewhere to nest that has got down the chimney. She'll have to get out somehow anyway to fetch nesting material, but I'm a bit nervous about opening it again!

I like hornets, and wasps as well as bees, as long as they nest somewhere out of the way... like LW I feel that inside the house is pushing it...
  • I usually open the windows and the door and 'talk' them out of the room, it seems to work if you stay calm and just point to where you want the bee to exit explaining that it's better for bees outside then put your arm with a pointing finger through the gap, works most times and for wasps too.....at least it works for me!

NOt sure I want to risk that with a hornet. Plus it's covered in ash so if it DOES decide to fly out it's going to make a hell of a mess!
  • No not with a hornet. DD1 had a hornet in her wood stove last summer, the cat was sitting with his nose pressed up to the glass and growling like a tiger and she thought initially it was a butterfly decided it was a bumble bee and got the door open just a crack when the wretched thing flew straight at her. She slammed the door and by a quirk of fate caught it in the door as it closed and luckily she had the insect spray in the hearth 'just in case' so she gave it a couple of good doses and vacated the room with the cat for an hour which saw it off!horrid things hornets indoors!

No insect spray here, and it's very definitely still in there. I can hear it buzzing every so often... It needs to go and find a nice hole in a tree to live in!

Lamewolf, in my pheasant induced mirth I missed this:
    These:

    Yes. Naturally.

Mar, We tried running at it. I tried clapping my wildflower book in its face which just made it even more aggressive! I think it is hilarious. OH might take another day or two to find it funny.

As for bees/wasps etc in the kitchen, I don't remove them either, but perhaps putting out a bowl of sugar water will make it easier to remove? I've used sugar water with vinegar to kill fruit flies before, but of course we love our bees (even if not in the house!)

    Hello Fencers,

Sorry I haven't been around recently. That pesky life stuff and illness getting in the way and I haven't put on my computer for quite a while.

I hope everyone is doing ok.

I admit to not having read this or any other thread for some time. I'm hoping to be back to something a bit closer to 'normal' (whatever the heck that is?) soon.

    Love to all xx
