I agree with you about eggs and the nicest ones I ever had was when DH had half a dozen chickens. I used to give them potato peels which they loved and the yolks of the eggs were a lovely gold colour very different from the pale yellow washed out yolks you can get even with so called well looked after hens .

I loved my wee chickens and still miss them - the eggs were fantastic and I'm not mad on eggs usually. Do like one boiled with fresh bread and thick butter though. Whatever scare story it is, I'll cope just fine without knowing :)

Mar I think it may be the research study from Illinois on eggs and increased chance of heart and circulatory diseases . Pretty well based on Cholesterol levels I think we all know about cholesterol and associated problems We're also old enough and wise enough to know unless on advice from the medical experts there is such a thing as all things in moderation . I doubt if my 2-4 poached or boiled eggs will do me much damage , same for your boiled eggs

There were figures published a year or so ago for the US for obesity and major heath problems , Roughly 100m obese and significantly obese people . With respect to any US mse members I don't think I'll follow their advice . I appreciate they along with Canada helped the UK survive rationing both during and for a few years after WW2 but long ago they went for intensive large scale production with all hormones ,additives etc for faster ,bigger and better .

A study a few years ago listed American food stuffs which would not be allowed on the shelves in UK or EU stores for health and safety and other reasons including eggs . Most traditional farmers have pretty well been starved out of existence and not many can export much . Anyway the egg thing has been slapped down by Michael Moseley , Drs and others so a little of what we fancy Mar .

As a small child the excitement of searching for the eggs either in the garden of the prefab I lived in until I was 5 or the 3 allotments my dad and two grandads worked was magical . They were so patient teaching me to be quiet and gentle with the hens and what was a weed and what was a growing vegetable .I often think of them with a smile .

I'm with you all in eggs. I love them and probably eat 4 or 5 a week. I do buy local eggs but really miss my own hens. Mine were real household pets and it was nothing to go out and find our old dog and a hen sharing the same bowl of food. I even had to make a special roost for Hinge and Bracket so that they could watch TV through the window. Life is a lot more boring these days.

It seems many are pining for the hen days monna. Hinge and Bracket are brilliant names . My 2-4 eggs are per week . I love poached eggs , they make a quick lunch always with Lurpak toast . Unlike Mar I'm not fond of boiled eggs . That goes back to not liking egg white as a child . I used to soak up the runny yolk with soldiers and then it would mean my mum standing over me while I tried to force down the boring white .

Once I got my own kitchen I would boil my eggs and mash them add a tiny pinch of salt and a little butter and make sandwiches I still do it and always mash the poached ones up on toast . Mashed egg from a bowl was always the second back to eating stage after a poorly child had managed to eat dry toast . Some of them still do it now .

Veering off a bit from eggs... I'm reading a book about WW2 and the 40s just now - and it's fascinating how little they ate. Things like sardines on toast, a fresh egg with soldiers, and loads of home-grown veg with small amounts of meat. No wonder they were the healthiest and longest-lived of any generation.
Polly my cholestrol is always sky high but it's the good one as well as the bad and they have said that's just how I am. I dont worry about it anyway.
  • My daughter in law is on the wait list for an urban chicken coop. She's got her birds picked out and my son is building her coop. They just have to get to the top of the list. She's not allowed to sell her eggs if she has a surplus but has a list of people who are willing to help her out, lol.

Mar - the rationing in WW2 was to ensure everyone had enough to be healthy. I think today's kids would be horrified. I know my mum and my gran often let me have their cheese ration - 2ozs a week if I remember correctly. I can remember loads of people keeping rabbits for the pot as well as chickens and everyone grew veg of one sort of another to eke out.
Chocolate didn't come off rationing until the early 50's - I think that's probably why I've never developed a passion for it!

My kelp tabs are not big, I look in reviews on amazon for any mention of size because I can't swallow big pills. I think maybe this is how kelp works, you take it for a month and it gives your system a boost then you settle back into the black hole of fatigue :D
I'm sleeping ok Polly but have the energy levels of a very old slug. I spend the days in the recliner reading and floating around the net - haven't even got the energy to knit. But I'm not down at all, I'm quite happy in my wee sluggy self.
I need bloods done I think because I was exactly the same before diagnosis of the AI and the doc said I'd have been dead in a few more months if it hadn't been picked up.
I'm going to get Floravital this week, have to go out nd collect the RV new specs and will get it then.

Hi :)...Im still taking my kelp since you told me about them years back , I dare not stop them now as Im feeling ok .....They are good for energy and also hair growth , my hair is in brilliant condition now half way down my back and its always so shiny , even my hairdresser is jealous because it looks good and grows very quick........

Its got to be the kelp as I dont take anything else apart from gluacosamine for my joints .......
My hair grows quicker now at 61 years old than when I was half that age .......Its grown 16inches in 3 years ......

My energy levels are good too , but if I sit down tea time im out for the count for a half an hour , but I suppose if im busy all day thats to be expected ......Ive been told magnesium is good for tiredness too but I havent tried any because im ok on kelp ....

I agree its always best to go to doctors first to check if nothing serious is wrong ......Sheila
