5 OS pleasures in your day today - part 3

Hello. I’ve just came up to my bedroom. Not purposely to sleep as such but I’ve kind of done as much of today as I want to! Going to try and watch The Crown without dozing off. Blissfully cool upstairs as it’s boiling hot downstairs!
Up early and walked dog whilst it was still quiet and peaceful just us and the birds and a random runner.
Made two batches of tablet ( Scottish sweet) which will be dropped off as gifts next few days.
Nice chat with friend on phone. She’s been poorly all week so no long phone calls till this morning.
Son and I went to my mothers. Ironing, dishes, hoovering, floors washed, made a pot of soup for her ( which son had a hefty bowl of!) he took her car for a run and then loaded my car with some logs she randomly had in garage and some wood that was randomly in garage. I plan to make a log store with it.
He drove my car back and I walked as there wasn’t enough room for us both! The first time I’ve let him drive my car!
Fire on. And an afternoon spent watching / dozing through The Crown.
Then DD2 came in from work and we all snuggled in and watched Shrek. Nice but sad that it’s just three when we were once five. ( and I’m still four but she’s on the other side of the world and I’m doing Christmas without her and while the better part of me says she’s living her best life and living how she chooses to the other selfish part of me misses her and would love her to be here with me being my Christmas fairy...instead of living with grinches!
Watched The Chase then thought I’ve done Saturday! Tomorrow is another day:)
Night
Sue my heart reaches out to you and your family. Make the most of this Christmas time. Enjoy the sparkle of lights and of love. We are all right behind you on here and will mentally prop you up when it’s tough. X0 -
Thinking of you, Sue.
Pleasures for today (Saturday).
1) A lie in after an appalling night's sleep.
2) Hens OK.
3) Got various jobs done.
4) Made 2 trays of mince pies and jam tarts and also an apple and mincemeat big flan. The orange curd I had made that I was not sure if I liked, made surprisingly really nice tarts.
5) Went to my sister's from 5pm as brother in law was out for the evening and she is tired out from the pneumonia so I did bath and bed time for small niece.
6) In bed with 1 hwb and will watch Casualty.0 -
Agree about HIGNFY frith and sue I think a reflection on where we're at with politics :-(
Sue my thoughts and prayers with you. mhags your post was particularly pertinent and well-put. Love to you both xxx
And so for yesterday
1) decided to learn lines for nativity walking down but a bus arrived and i was late so jumped on that. a neighbour had just been to visit the lady we bought our house from 21 years ago so of course lines put aside
2) all the adults are using scripts lol so I'll be OK (I have 4 parts - a butler, a king, a priest and someone from life of Brian)
3) decided to stop at mr l on the way home. met another neighbour who had the car so also bought 3 red wine and 2 prosecco
4) feeling emotional and exhausted so took the boys for a very long walk to the nature reserve. goodness it was wet and muddy, but lovely walk on the shortest day
5) when i got back house full with all 3 children, ds's gf and gbf. We got all the furniture moved from the sitting room (to be carpeted monday) into the music room, swept the sitting room, cleaned the skirting boards, and gbf took the old stair gate and curtain rail to be dropped today at the dump.
Another friend had also when i was out returned a beautiful dress i lent her for a ceilidh. unbidden she'd taken it to the dry cleaners where it lost a few sequins. Honestly i can only tell because she told me. it still looks gorgeous, and i will be wearing it to at least 2 parties this christmas / NY. She is mortified. i have tried to reassure her. pointed out dress was passed onto me by xoh some years ago, has been well used and well loved. how do i reassure her?! She offered to buy me a new dress (unfortunately she looked the make up online and that's when she will have seen it was quite an expensive dress - my xoh had expensive tastes!), left me smoked salmon (yum) and says she'll never use dry cleaners again.her dh has recently been diagnosed with an incurable cancer so i suspect that has a lot to do with her emotions :-(MrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

Festive greetings Folks,
I hope to be joining you for the next two weeks. Happy to have the time to catch up with your 'Doings of the Day'.......(Excellent quote from the Peter Pan Performance we have seen recently), and hope you are all well.
Yesterday
1. Managed a whole nights sleep.
2. Walked to Lidl with DH and doggy to buy pastries for breakfast.
3. Trip to town to collect food warmer for Xmas Day....... Stopped at Lidl again for 15p veg and looked in at the Dr Martens shop to research birthday present.
4. DS2 had second timed run for Navy entrance. Passed again, but new join date will be July. He is now under threat to get meaningful employment, as he cannot continue to hibernate in his room for another 6 months.
5. All children present and correct for tea. Jolly conversation. Very proud of them all.
6. Watched Christmas with the Kranks with DH and DD. Silly tradition, but drank our glasses of Baileys when it appeared in the film! Christmas has officially begun.
Have a lovely day 😊0 -
Hey House Elf
Saturday pleasures,
A good night’s sleep which included a lie-in until nearly 9am, must have needed it.
We had some sunshine, in fact at 10 degrees it almost felt like a spring day, no doubt the worst of the winter weather is yet to come but just for today it felt good.
Over to see the beautiful grey one, she fell asleep in the sun whilst I was grooming her. A pocket full of treats soon disappeared as I fed them to various horses including my own, they all seem to have sussed that I’m a bit of a soft touch for a hello whicker.
Popped into the village co-op and discovered fruity sourdough, lady behind the till warned me that it was addictive lightly toasted with butter, she was right!
A small Yule celebration, a glass of something good. I did wander outside around 11 but the cloud cover meant no stars in sight.0 -
For all who worry about posting erratically, the Awful Warning has reappeared!
DundeeDoll - first turkey dinner?! "allergy / ingredient labels" - I'm intrigued - please could you explain a bit? I love those little beans adding up to coffees. Hurrah mrpiano's extended family & mulled wine. Pakistan phd student picked a good source for Christmas traditions! 42 questions & loads of memories - wonderful! Merry hordes make shifting furniture easier.
villagelife - Wisley glow - wonderful! Candles are just magical. Shoes in cupboards? Awed!
LaineyT - "prepped bacon butties and coffee" - blast about sinus headache but hurrah that man! Emporia can vary wildly by time - I love a dawn raid. Hurrah fixed oven! I adore Puissance. "all three nieces in 24 hours"! Lavender oil can be wonderful. Shrewd horses learn which pockets have treats!
BoP - you remind me I must exhume the tree & decorate it! Sorry about cat but treasure Raffles as more light to appreciate his yellow stuff by! That Loo makes me want to plant nettles. You not as sleek as a racing snake on all that splendid real food?
juliettet - one of the many joys of this thread is being welcomed back anyway! Too coordinated a tree looks like you just bought one, not the old family member wheeled out to twinkle at you & remind you of youthful hi-jinks..
VJsmum - supervision was ... OK? What did you spike their sherry decanter with?!
mhagster - snoozing good, back massage ouchful but needful. A proper Afternoon Tea - excellent! Firelighting will come.with practice. What has Haggis eaten now & are you barefoot without socks? Love refilled photo frames. Real BLT - yum! Delighted DD1 has made herself a stocking - upholding the important things! Rain on the roof - excellent. Tablet - are you a heat to X for Y minutes or a stir wildly for ages method? The grinches are at least beside you in person.
ampersand - dashit!
Frith - ah yes time differences... Oh sister, hoping health returns. No car is a two edged pleasure, and repairs then eat cash - botherit. Bigger son returned! home made orange curd tarts - yum! Special gift to sis to do bath & bed for niece.
Nargleblast - excellent to hear Kevin in form, hoping you too relatively fit & healthy? Greenery - you inspire me to find the secateurs!
Purple kitten - ah Giles books - solid Christmas fun!
balabooberlies - Black beauty in hand, ready for christmas. Smashing!
Suffolksue - you post when you can, we're here. It may feel disjointed but Christmas rarely runs on rails. I am so glad you have machine & dryer - life would be monstrously harder without them & enjoy the trees & lights & DGS14!
mrs motivated - "feel like I'm running a laundry business" know that feeling but hurrah for technology & for shrewd planning where possible.
house elf - good to see you again, hurrah Navy & yes, May Not Hibernate!
Cottage Economy, Bfh, MrsLurcherwalker, sparrer, broomstick, MandM90, Mrs Salad Dodger, oldtractor, zaxdog, sashanut & all who post here, hoping the OS pleasures are still there just not recorded here
OS pleasures recently
Please Don’t think I have a memory - I work with computers which hold information tidily til my biological processing can respond to it! Husband says flatly I’m an iPhone addict - nope, but a computer addict certainly. Just as well given how I pay the mortgage.
The election results are through & my mite of tactical voting has not achieved the hoped for result. I have wept (& snarled) & am now beginning to get ready to move on.
I have lots of offspring in the house! Largely as we’re going to gran’s & I’m driving but it’s good to see them all, looming over me.
Listening to Dead Ringers - at last, a program that dissects the politics in nearer real time than Mock the Week.
Mother in law sent us home with Cornish pasties - really good farm shop ones, and “T cakes” lovely big squishy white bread rolls. Ah, Wigan kebab...
Son trying to catch a mouse alive. So far mouse (“Jerry”) is evading him & we are letting them play. Requests for chocolate to use as bait have been flatly denied. (Trapped under a cigar box & escorted out of the building....)
Godfather reported waking cold in the small hours, put the heating on & got back into bed. Cat joined him minutes later!
Cheering on a colleague who is beginning to plan her Christmas food shop from somewhere not Tesco or M&S. She’s looking at who’s reviewed best & is ready to hit five places rather than one convenient & one backstop. I want to cheer her but worry her husband’s health may be driving her search for Best.
Some days I really feel for the chaps on our floor - they hold a door & get an appreciative murmur, three strides & repeat, to find the lady has dived sideways into the ladies!
Womanfully resisting temptation - there’s a tub of festive chocolates on the desk next mine and it’s staying unmolested. There’s trousers are quite tight enough already & my knee’s sore. Heck of a time to try not to scoff extra calories.
Someone crooning over the detail of Pitt River’s archaeology - it was indeed admirable but his method of studying ethnographic detail was pretty much buy it, hire the former owner to use it, and once the job’s done, take it home with you. Selection of boats and assorted things that caught his educated but magpie eye - later stashed in the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford!
Dropped off two scraps of paper that’ll give the homeless bloke a Big Mac fries & his choice of hot drink. Litter picking has bonuses.
Waved to tailor! Always good to see him, by daylight & in my case off out working but still good.
Saw a little old lady of ?Chinese origin crossing the road clutching a Heron stores bag & wondered if that’s where she’s shopped or if she just likes the bird pattern on the bags.
Heading over to Hull for a day learning in person rather than following a bit of paper. Gives me a day with a colleague who won’t be with us next year & a proper appreciation of the travel hours to come for team meetings! (Plus developing technical skills.)
Watching a worm swimming through a puddle. Awed.
Hull is a very relaxed railway station & built on the same template as Preston, which adds to my sense of calm.
Conductor having to sort the previous three customers (all of whom were a bit upset) got to me, & his expression when he saw my ticket was a wide open return! We beamed at each other.
Recalling your baggage identification DundeeDoll, I was amused to see a passenger had a toy mouse or piglet twined round the side of a handle - eye catching!
Met another invisible epileptic at work. Mid-adult onset, solidly controlled but rueful about the lifetime meds. Neither of us is willing to stop them though & risk another seizure, both of us value the autonomy driving bestows. Must learn to drive a pony & trap....
Aw - son ordered me a Denby mug & it arrived in a handful of bits. TKMaxx packaging Insufficient & he isn’t robust on Sad Fart... (Yet!)
Some TV show “you used our son’s death for political advantage” & I thought ‘situation normal’... it is possible I have overdosed a tad on Machiavelli.
One of the cards we received has a “suitable for fountain pens” alert on the back.... Son boggled, I gurgled.
Recalling my granny’s complaint that all the Christmas cards seem to miss the point & it appears to be the “festival of drunken robins” - largely as husband requires me to source cards, addresses & stamps for his family.
Was getting irate at computer being slow when realised had free data from phone & used that to get the data trotting, rather than staggering & repeatedly falling over. A crazy use of phones, but the extra data was a freebie.
Got the festive bedspread on. Make me smile & feel more upbeat. Still the tree to go up yet.
Giggling that while a good backscratch is glorious, an embarrassed son is above rubies. He came all over bashful.
Middleson having overdone the Christmas partying a bit & consequently spent much of yesterday nauseous, decided he wanted a kebab supper. He managed a third of it! Still, he’s young.
Chuckling at ‘news’ story that the Queen requires to know if her staff whether you wish a book token or a gift token mine months in advance. Administrative genius!
Chaps happily recognising Andre Roussimof (Fezzik in Princess Bride) in a Conan film & making Schwarzenegger look Short!
Right. The time of peace & joy is approaching but first we have a treble of planks to clear (Olympia showjumping traditional ruler out of the less than very good, as it takes skill technique & dash of luck to clear all three). Health & strength & love & courage & big hugs & loads of good memories for all as have need.0 -
DfV. Racing Snakes. I will put me house on the winner!
Frith, BoP has not watched it since the Angus left! That was quite some time ago. Too scripted? You need toi see Colin Quinn on the flix of net thing! Red State and Blue State!
Nows onto some bits from BoP.
Was at the emporium w8rs this very morning. Got front of car park and empowered Bulldozer mode. Too many gawpers were inn this day. Did normal shop and a few reversion foods for xmas eve. On weigh there, the cars weres queueing to get into emporium S, and it was not half past the nine o'clock! Just pondered that on the porkl pie at £8 and people were buying it. I just gets our usual one, but bigger as it is the xmas thing.
BoPsie and mes put up our tree. We use the lighted artificial one, so wes no destroy the forest.
Had double snorker brakefests the weakened. One yesterday and one today! Nice with the mushrooms and grilled toms! Rite tasty!
Now offs to get the gammon ready for the fests. Will boil then glaze with honey mustard. Rolls for tea with normal pie of pork!
Ordered me trainset from Santa.
Now we has left it to us to figure it out!0 -
Pleasures today.
Took dog for walk across fields and into a stream, great fun watching her splashing around then drying off by chasing seagulls across the field.
Sunshine after dull days, the sun has returned. Days will now start getting longer.
Fresh linen on the bed for tonight.
Call from son confirming he has arrived safely in Bangkok, where he is spending Christmas and New Year.
Roger, our 15 weeks old kitten, snuggling up to me on the sofa, looking nothing like the little horror I caught trying to chew through the Christmas lights just 15 minutes ago.One life - your life - live it!0 -
oh dear, I've been remiss... have only skimmed but sending a hug to Sue... enjoy your precious time
