OS Pleasures recently
I need a hearing test: “books uniforms & a safe place to learn” I heard as “books unicorns & a safe place” & thought “eh?” Himself is still chortling 7 minutes later.
Cries of joy when husband finds gas cylinder holder. In the new camping kettle he was looking to put it in, having emptied two drawers… Then playing with it as a UFO.
Driving, I slowed down & carefully overtook a sheep & her two lambs. Who had broken out & were puttering down the road. It’s common round here, but the lambs make it seriously cute!
Found colleague’s home & handed over his locker contents. (Large wad of baby photos, then met the originals!) Long drive but everyone so glad.
Overcame printer’s unwillingness & printed off labels for the destruction cupboards now manager has confirmed nothing improper. She wants us to keep the projector despite all the plug & play possibilities - an elderly but solid insurance policy!
Stumbled back in & youngest hugged me then made me a pint of tea.
As beavers are reintroduced, someone is humming the theme from the Dambusters… I wish little beaver Rashford the best of luck.
Huddersfield market had a few pieces of Denby & I had to take myself in hand - I'm supposed to be decluttering!
Boris thinks working from home doesn’t work? How did various things happen then? I can tolerate a joker but an idiot is something else.
“Lying very still and thinking of things that are flat” - apparently one of my childhood remedies for nausea, that my parents recalled with sufficient humour to try themselves to good effect.
Oh dear me. Family tree branch alliance to the Byron clan - ye gods what a bunch. Another death in the West Indies & no other information - you do wonder if they fell or were pushed… [oh, Navy - say no more!]
I got to Costco! Youngest is diligently heaping tins oldest at the top & is bemused by my strict ‘out of sight of windows’ rule. Husband opines I need a (“body sized”) sack of oatmeal & will then be prepared for a siege. (I need him to dig me a well, first. My own water supply would be very helpful.)
Another day packing things - this time fragile electronics. Still, I had an excellent call with an exam candidate who was nervous but well prepared & then a delightful call when the exam was over, torn between anxiety it had gone dreadfully and a sneaking feeling it has gone very well!
Aww “hey work-mum, I need help” - one of our trainees has his own use of the English language but I chuckled & showed how & why to solve the problem. ‘How’ he forgets, ‘why’ sticks!
When in Costco I took a few snaps of the clothes area. Today I emailed them to a new colleague, who didn’t realise she’s now eligible for Costco membership, as she Loves the big names & was on the phone crooning minutes after the email arrived! Now, how to persuade her to try charity shops?!
Health strength love & courage to all as have need. Sunscreen & umbrellas likewise & hurrah the lengthening warming days that mean my lemon pip seedlings are up to 5 leaves minimum & Still alive!10 -

Evening all
It's really spooky and gloomy here - don't know where the sun went earlier.
Five pleasures:
1. Got the washing in before torrential rain and sudden gloom.
2. Listening to a set of Make Do and Mend knitting-ish podcasts that was mentioned in the 2022 Fashion on the Ration thread. Not doing much knitting right now but it makes for a lovely gentle listen.
3. Rose bush in the garden/back yard is, as predicted, suddenly awash with yellow blooms. So cheering.
4. Woke too early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep so lay in bed and read. What a nice way to start the day!
5. Phone call with DS2 a bit earlier. He's now heard about his £150 energy rebate so there's hope I might do soon - same council.
Sweet dreams

Hello. She croaks. Very sore throat.Anyway no more work till Sunday. Hu-blooming-rah.Out with dog at 4.15pm, barely light, huge moon, a feeling of just washed ( rain) on the pavement, daisies tightly in bud, still sleeping. Just us and the birds. In at work for 4.30am…how ridiculous! Home for 7.30am.
A kind of pottering around home day. Tidied up. A dog my constant companion.Vets in the afternoon. Just a check up regarding his medication. Now allowed back inside.Washing mainly dry, all ironed ( be impressed…I rarely iron these days but had linen shirts to iron)
Dinner was chicken, roast veg, parsnips, new potatoes and sprouts! Now raining. It’s been so cool today, here where is the sunshine?11 -
Pleasures for today (Tuesday)
1) Not a bad sleep.
2) Smaller son went off to college to do his biology exam. This did not go well. I'm now pondering whether my insisting on at least trying retakes was a good idea after all. The only English revision I have managed to get him to do (at all) was to make him watch me circle lots of useful points on an old exam paper just now. Circle the language features for an hour then answer the questions from your interesting points you have put in the margins. This is to someone who has point blank refused, in 14 years at school, to show any working, make a single note or circle anything... Never mind.
3) Managed to get the washing dry, between torrential showers.
4) Killed time before son pick up by wandering around Waitrose. A nice Waitrose lady thought I was taking ages to decide which toaster to buy (I wasn't going to buy anything at all!) so we had a chat about GCSEs, which turned into her daughter went to the same Uni as me and they are pondering where to send her grand daughter to school, as she has Down Syndrome. We then laughed about our £8 Tesco value toasters, that have both lasted 15 years.
5) Went round the charity shops very briefly.
6) Had a look round next door's garden with next door man, as it has taken 3 people 2 days to remove a willow stump, 1.5 metres in diameter.
7) Now in bed waiting for DIY SOS. I've just had to leap out of bed and shout out of the window as a magpie swooped down to try and take eggs from the nest in the eaves.11 -
Hello back here again. Kind of fell out of the habit but....
1. Got a hospital apt booked
2. Woman up the road asked if I'd like some lupin seedlings. Thought she meant a couple, opened door to find a roses tin with 11 seedlings in soil. I've managed to find homes for some.
3. Felt well enough to cook a proper meal.
4. Have nearly finished my cross stitch sampler.
5. Won something on ebay for pennies that I've been after for ages.
6. First bloom from my generous gardener about to come out and yellow iris starting to come out.
7. Didn't wake up with a headache.
The game's afoot....11 -
For Monday.
1. No work and warm day.
2. Met a friend at her flat for lunch. A relaxing time catching up with each other.
3. DS2 managing to find an NHS dentist only 5 minutes walk from his work.
4. Moved pots about in the garden before planting them up for the summer.
5. Tasty tea with enough left over to put in the freezer.
For yesterday
1. Still managing a positive attitude at work despite there now being a very noisy building site outside my window.
2. Temporary traffic lights on way to work are no longer there. Made a huge different my journey.
3. Salmon cooked with some wild garlic from the garden and with salad with salad leaves from the garden.
4. Sat in the garden with a glass of wine with DH and in the rain. The tree have us fairly good protection.
5. It being peaceful outside.11 -
For yesterday,
We have a pair of blackbirds nesting in our back hedge and they are out all day searching for grubs in the grass.
Changed hoover bag and remembered to pop in a couple of drops of citrus essential oil, stops it smelling too dog.
Over to the stables, did a little work in the school then hot clothed pony to get the grease out of her coat, finished off with a cool rinse and then put her back out, have no doubt whatsoever that the minute I was out of sight she would have rolled to put all that lovely dirt back in ☺️Did a 20 min session of strength training, trying to build some into weekly routine.
Meal out with Capt S and one of our best friends, good time having a long overdue catch up, tasty food as well so no cooking for me.11 -
