5 OS pleasures in your day today - part 3

Part 2Mother-in-law happily watching some Christmas movie, youngest even more happily shredding its plot & characters “it’ll not end up in murder-suicide” plus “be-boop” to remind us this script seems largely computer generated. Husband hoping it turns into a variant on squid game…Trying not to snigger at BCB’s blast boxers - underwear for those in peril of IEDs & tested by an absolutely thumping Big Bang in Wales. Fetching colours & ye gods Kevlar in the important areas. (A long way from the original doctor Collis-Brown’s cough mixture!)Youngest’s style when I’m at my desk is to appear on the far side of a partly opened door - slightly horror movie, & then when he has answers he is satisfied with, to utter “Yes” in the pitch & inflection of the Star Wars bad guy Emperor Palpatine. I am so lucky it ususally ends in food and/or tea! There is a special pleasure in realising you have the wrong day, & so no meeting, & can eat that late lunch in comfort & company.Another drag to the parcel drop off, and we then slumped together nibbling Cornettos. Allied more like flatmates than family, generations fuzzy in the pleasure of semi-licit icecream!Awww, Himself is eating the home made quince jelly he helped make! With cheese, and in modest amounts as he knows how much sugar went in.Online Carol service - still beautiful, if a little wry that here we are online again. Lovely to hear the traditional music & to hear one of our vicars, carefully recorded in her echoing stone church.I love how Clangers punt to the Soup Wells, to ask the Soup Dragon for soup.Oh scrunch! It was, I suppose, inevitable. The chaps managed to send the tree flying & a glass angel is broken. Pleasure will be sorting it back out better. Middleson’s star, made in Primary, now bulldog clipped to the top!Ration pack purchases arrived - lightweight affordable food in packets & some flammables for my amusement, plus a sack of isotonic powder to mix into restorative beverages.I am pondering how to store & carry my half mask respirator & have decided an approximation of the traditional gas mask case, rendered in brown cardboard with a suitably vintage label, will do nicely… Himself is torn between the classic evacuee label, or something more heartfelt in the style of Paddington. [And I have settled on a Dutch webbing satchel I already had, with sundry alcohol wipes, tissues & a beanie.]Yeay! All being well by Sunday night the entire household will be jabbed as thoroughly as medical advice suggests. Himself has convinced Middleson - somehow & will queue with youngest this afternoon. The relief!Sis having problems with verbally threatening neighbour: but called the police, made (yet another) statement & is now in the position where if he is publicly abusive one more time he’ll get a criminal record. My sister should not be reduced to quivering like a greyhound by a lout. Appalled, but so proud of her endurance & using the formal tools. My D of E all done bar the paperwork son is still going off to weed community flowerbeds as part of the volunteering. (He likes gardening as an exercise regime.) He will then collect his father, get his second jab & they’ll go see mother in law (he’s her favourite).Husband returned from a carefully masked trip out steering youngest to the vaccination centre clutching a lovely little box inlaid with wood, bone & mother of pearl, Khatam style. I adore the intricate designs & tiny pieces - and pounced on a backgammon set on a car boot years back. Saw an (almost) as lovely one in a Persian restaurant for its clientèle & the manager preened as I crooned, then showed me four little boxes used to discreetly ferry the bill…There are some questions a mother saves so much energy by simply Not Asking. Whose is the pillow slung over the shower door (let alone Why) is one such. My imagination is supplying several possible stories - I foresee a new scout game where you get points for the funniest answer, as well as points for the nearest homage to a festive action movie (if ever a pillow should be wearing a battered white vest…) etcA grand day out with Himself, where he got assorted toys & tools, I got assorted toys & Denby, & we even stocked up on haggis & big ziplocs at the emporium! We were then stuffed in traffic en route home but made it to the last 10 minutes of the family zoom, so all is downright cheerful. Not least as when asked "when is that clown on again tonight?" I did a quick snootch through news & TV feeds & said "either before 7 or after 9, if he interrupts the Strictly Final, there'll not be a Tory in power for a decade." Sisters laughed, parents had to have Strictly explained...We are beginning to see correlation between regular eating & sensible telephony with mother in law hence opinion “erratic nibblings lead to feeble mindedness”… which will look Wonderful on a festive t shirt. It seems I am the house dictionary. “How’d you spell Malay? With weapons?” “Melée.” “I can’t do accents.” “Still three e-s.” Oh my beloved family!A lovely moment with youngest & I en rapport. “Kintsu-whatsit?” “Ah yes, thingummy” - bless the lad.Oooh Strictly. Oh my beating heart. AJ and her boot & the glittercrutches (colleague in identical boot but with heel as Achilles rupture now has much clearer idea what I am on about for decorating crutches! Just he prefers the Iron Man look.) Oh, all those glorious dances...Health, Strength, Love & Courage to all as have need, keep talking to people (masks are not gags, but diction takes on new value) & may the last sprint towards whatever day you celebrate be mostly tranquil. Truly an IOU for-when-this-wave-has-subsided is worth more than almost anything you can Buy!12

Dig, you said.....
unquestionably your spirit is indomitable
I thank you for that. But you know I cry daily, sometimes many times. Sometimes I find breathing difficult when I remember. I will miss him for the rest of my life. He was my mentor, my protector.
He would have been proud of me today. I worked hard.

Bala- I'm sure he was proud of you every day.
DfV - impressive post, as ever. You always seem to be very busy and have such varied interests. A full life indeed.
Two highlights this weekend
Went to garden centre Saturday and DS and family were there too. That was a lovely surprise. Kids and I shared chocolate concrete. Not had any for ages.
Then today DGC came to our house . Two sitings in one weekend! That's not happened for a long while. So good to see them regularly again.
Strictly final was brilliant, though I did feel for AJ. I'm pleased about the winner but they were both so good that it almost didn't matter who won.
Happy Sunday everyone12 -
Even though I am well into my third age I never lost that feeling of being a child with my Dad. It was a mixture of respect, love, admiration etc
Sorry for sounding like one here............

1 A looong lay in seemed to be needed.
2 Leftovers today, I turned it into a curry that’s still cooking.
3 Cleaned up the oven and shelves.
4 Re stocked all the bird feeders as loving the wagtail and long tails.
5 I have been looking at finances and mse posts, and I have decided to “slash” spending as we are fully stocked, realistically for the first 4 months of 2022 and I feel rather pleased at the idea.

Pleasures for today (Sunday)
1) Not a bad sleep.
2) Hens OK.
3) Bigger son and his girlfriend appeared this afternoon for a cup of tea.
4) Smaller son and I went into town where a cul-de-sac puts on a light show each year. We sat in the car for about 30 minutes watching, it was so well done.
5) Had a bit of a tidy up. Cleaned the bathroom, changed a bed etc.
6) Huge Sainsburys order came and I had a chat with the driver about air source heat pumps! He wants one plus solar panels.
7) Got all the stuff ready for lemon curd making tomorrow.11 -
DigforVictory - you may be able to find some new uses for the hairspray - I know it stops runs in nylon stockings. Good as a bug spray?
