Some sad news here that my friend's mum died this morning. It has been a horrible year for so many people.12 -
Sorry to hear about your friend’s mum Frith.
For yesterday,
Up early and brrrr cold, think I need to dig out my warmer PJ’s.
Nice long, hot bath and read my book.
Picked some of my apples and made an apple snow for dessert, it’s something my Mum used to make a lot so good childhood memories.
Bit of a Springsteen afternoon, first we listened to one of his radio programmes then we put all his albums on shuffle via the Sonos and played a few games of Yahtzee, I won thanks to two double Yahtzees.
Long walk with small dog, lots of games with the tennis balls.11 -
Frith sorry to hear about your friends Mum.
Suffolksue thinking of you
1. Still on holiday and taking life easy
2. Swimming mainly in pool which is great especially when I'm the only one swimming in it.
3. Warm, sunny weather
4. Good food and wine
5. Company of DH and DS111 -
Whee! Bank Holiday Weekend! Several days straight not having to answer the phone, hurrah! Not even raining much.Frith - presuming bigger son's tetanus is fully up to date & that he has abundant footwear as spiking a foot tends to demote even loved footwear. Council getting eye-watering but delighted MrsNEET sensible. Interview trajectory, yikes! Driving lessons & shoes polished, oh my. "Post interview, fed the hens" - absolutely. Now a SENDIASS lady? Gosh. Forgive me, I hadn't realised smaller son 6'2", concertina-ed indeed! Good to hear hens repluming - given the falling temperatures, a relief! Sorry to hear about friend's mum.LaineyT - new to me Icelandic author sounds wonderful! Isn't it wonderful when a new idea is grasped the first time?! "definitely a soup kind of day" - But of course! <Adds to crack-on-with list> Oh gosh yes puppy cuddles with those amazing paws the only clue. Nurturing an inherited tea service is very satisfying. Mint tea & rest! Yikes, a tree-surgeon-proof horse is possibly deaf? A Springsteen afternoon - now there's a happy thought!Suffolksue - runner beans are observing tradition. not convenience & very glad you have Sky cricket. Sending so much love & strength your way & delighted he can still insist. Of course that he's pain free, and has you, too.BoP - ah, cricket in the background. These little touches that say "Hah!" to full time employment. Ah, curried Buzzard. "Gone wrong cottage cheese?" underestimates the role of rennet, no? Taxman email? Trust not, they tend to stick to pen [ahem, quill] & paper. Buzzard marinade duly noted. "Raining so must be Bank Holiday" - can't argue! Miword the poise of black & white. The ears - said to be a trait of a good mouser? Welcome, Kitty!Happycas - the organisation is intermittent. Playing "hunt a can of baked beans" last night took 4 minutes & a phone call... If Big School seems wicked hairy, go over the covid plans and ask pointed questions about pastoral care. Hope posh Chinese was fun? Book on sofa sounds blissful! Excellent timing, o mother of the groom - this year is being much less cooperative.VJsmum - never thought of baptising a woodburner. <will be pondering the nature of Original Sin for some time, now> As a health check when you "want coffee, chocolate and gin" sounds effective. Pace yourself? "I could hear her 'voice' "- yes, I get the something like with the Professor & the Armenian folk stories. Very Donne in another room. Steak sounds splendid. Home made masks are more comfortable, I find. I do love a takeaway that has slots - I feel cared for several times over! Playing the Killers & the Stranglers on long drives? Whyever not, if the back seat don't take it as an invitation?!mhagster - owch foot, oh grief camping tackle... Christmas in August sounds fine to me - happy times are good Any month of the year. Hurrah offsping moving logs [wholly right use of child labour] but dear heavens musical furniture indoors! Toddlers are unsporting in the sheer wattage. Insert two polos, get enough activity to power a village... My glasses need to be coaxed as I abuse them (& appear to have lopsided ears)! Splendid technological timing on guest phone's part! Oh my, the bed shuffle sounds like an energetic version of find the lady - but safe & happy travels DD1!villagelife - all 3 tests negative - OThankHeavens. A near personal pool - wonderful!DundeeDoll - embroidery kits tend to be winners, burpees and squats sound evil painful but a healthy month can only have helped. After a curry I tend to seek out fruit. Thank you for fajita guide! Will point hungry young at it & have the limes ready... Oh my dear the emotion & Pshaw to a funeral director who doesn't know the approximate running times of these things - 75 minutes excellent going. Yikes Lidl walk home.Bala - hoomanwatch now includes brother? Excellent! Not stashed a key in a small lock & lock deep amongst the mulch? MSE deal beer for BIL sounds splendid. Consult neighbour with calla lilies, and see if the offer of a corm next he splits them surfaces? Have a pot & plans for compost & watering just in case. Flo is back? Excellent!Purple kitten - love the idea of foxes coming & playing with the toys in the garden! Awed at FIL's birthday present. A book you have to struggle with is one you can come back to another year, perhaps. We managed not to put the heating on last night, but it was a dashed close run thing.Nargleblast - fresh bedlinen & cs wins - splendid!PaulieHerts - Himself wanted to take me out for a meal & was started to discover that a Cornish pasty on a breezy bench suited me better - it's not getting old (Dear Heavens No!) just having priorities bumped a bit.
OS Pleasures recentlyTrying to explain “woke” to himself, who thought it was an acronym. [Then SJW - some days I wonder if ignorance is bliss!]Himself going through the pot of rulers & finding one in brass - why? Likely to avoid sparks. Yet we have a phosphor bronze shovel (used for digging out magnetic triggered bombs) up on the beam positioned to reflect whatever light we put in front of it. Bring on the dark so I can enjoy it.I enjoy watching the racing. “It wouldn’t be Cartmel without sticky toffee pudding” Never realised McManus farms his tricksier horses over to Ireland for remedial training - some serious quality enjoying Cartmel! (I do love watching the horses.)“This family needed that wee bear every bit as much as he needed you.” - oh, Paddington!Middleson disrupted the family zoom to ask which -ology pertains to preserving specimens in jars. When I held to preservation, “I’m disappointed in you, mum”. So, like all shrewd parents, I finished the zoom call then hit Google, & There Is No -Ology for going rogue with formaldehyde (or ethanol) but I am stashing the phrase “ethically sourced specimens” for some future conversation...As I wait for the phone to ring (strange lull!) I deliberately enjoy root beer. So many glorious memories per sip!A gentleman suffering the pain of rejection by computer called. Having ascertained that this was not at all unique (further pain), we got chatting & I assured him that we “would have to get Kafka back for a rewrite”. “There are tears in my eyes”, the dear man declared, “but in a good way.” In this wonderful world of technology, your fellow (very) human is cherished. The pleasure of a met forecast reassuring me tomorrow will be cooler. With hellacious winds & lashing rain, it being Storm Francis, but so long as my lad’s tree stays upright & I need not lug a watering can, I can enjoy the anticipation. One son is cooking (well, heating fish fingers & felafel), the other is “helping” (“where’s my food?” - oh, Gods...) the pleasure is they agreed on food without fuss, even if fuss appears to trail them. Some days it’s hard to be a techie. I ended up padding the top of the printer (which had run out of black toner) with a not-yet-finished magazine, unplugged the power & comms cables, stacked the other printer (still with adequate toner) on top, plugged it all in, loaded paper, ran a successful test print & then the Serpent’s Tooth (King Lear, Act 1 Scene 4) said he didn’t need to print anything now. Pleasure is not strangling the young blighter, but contemplating it.Someone clipped a parked car’s wing mirror. Your first prang is a learning experience.... He’s already settled it, in cash, with the owner & honour satisfied all round. [All strength, Frith!]Just found “That is the end of the News” by Joyce Grenfell - a rather uncomfortable yet appropriate read. Mind, “All right, you shall be a cauliflower - only be it gently” rang a carillon of bells...Oh my. Stew & dumplings should not be a cause for tears. The lad did so love his dumplings. Still, with face washed and a bowlful eaten, a good stew is still a joy.Recovered hanging basket of tomato plants from casual fling by Storm Francis, still a few flowers left but the big crop now less likely. Tomato in bag has escaped it’s tie to trellis & I need to have a chat with it about flowering At All. (Does anyone else wonder if they should explain the birds & the bees to their vegetables?)We’re not good at sneaking - youngest coming shopping with me in the early quiet, has doubled back up to brush his teeth! Some of me touched & very proud, some of me flinching at boots thudding...Oh gods - very public praise is something I am utterly useless at. I was only doing my job but the lady writes letters for a hobby & now my name is splashed across 5 teams by a Respected Senior Personage, & I’m blushing so hard my toes are cold.Husband’s new Dymo label maker has arrived - looks like something from Alien from the side & the Enterprise from above but he’s happy. It’s birthday season & I was required to produce an uncreased £20 note. Amidst the awe & novelty (I do not get to meet, let alone get to be friendly [for any length of time] with £20 notes), I have to say young Turner both looks a little like Prof Brian Cox & dashed handsome!I love QI, you learn the strangest things. Soil Your Undies genuinely is a thing & genuinely does test the health of the soil. Just “plant” cotton undies and examine them a couple of months later. Fertile soil sustains more life & will reduce the undies to mere elastic whereas less populated soil leaves the garment still recognisable....Oh dear. Sliced pickled beetroot both meek in flavour and virulent on T shirt. Ahem. Why couldn’t it be the other way around?!
“How’d you spell that hammer?” Husband flails wildly“M-j-o-l-n-i-r” enunciates youngest“Cheers!”“I spelled that right?!” High pitched squalk of surprise....I love my menfolk, even if they are strange some days.Shopping for a desk lamp. Hoping to find an anglepoise for my birthday in a month. I want it for my office & Zooming Scouts, as we plan to return half live, half digital. [No joy today. <shrug> Miracles do not come to order!]The engineer came to a screeching halt “what did I come up for?” - surely he’s too young for early onset dementia? And the penny dropped “Internet!” Splendid - my computer will crash til that settles, but at least he’s happy.
Happy Bank Holiday Monday to all, regardless of weather, plans, to do lists, oughts, musts etc - may there also be some sheer "whee!" in there too. Health, strength, love & courage to all as have need, herbs & spices & liniment & thicker clothing likewise, and welcome Kitty Hot Paws!12 -
Smashing!
Only weigh to treat spuds!
sends another to the needy and Friffs friend!

Had the q skies go up and wrong on SatDay, but managed to watch the cricket! New box is arriving this day! No need of the scammers and the google thing saying bullshines. Please though sue the Duck as it does not track you!
Kitty Has taken over wear Raffles left off. She is too muich a madam, butt she let her bum know she is about! She can trumps ;like a trooper/ This morning she is on a brake for freedom, out the front window! BoPsie is out with treats! More soonest!
As the q thing was sugared, we watched more of The Grand Tour yesterday! Wobbelades and cheeses were consumed! Nuts were picked!
Good news, Kitty has returned. BoPsie forget her keys and is now stranded looking for her!! Please think of BoPsie in yous forts!
Had another snorker fest this morning, with mushrooms, best back, toast, poached egg, fried spuds and some SpagYetti! Nice and tasty, tea was drinked!
That is all for this bank holiday! Kitty has passed her thirst whether test!Is the back of the end that counts!

DfV, my son calls our dog Mjolnir, her proper name is Molly but once she unleashes that Border Collie energy she is definitely Thor's hammer. A lethal weapon indeed.
Racking up pleasures today - got up early, out at 07:30 for dog walking.
Brilliant sunshine, grass soaked in dew, typical of the onset of autumn.
Picked a few more blackberries.
General tidying today, son due back home soon from a weekend away.
Cooking - rice pud for tomorrow, dough for baguettes, and an apple and blackberry oatcake using some of the foraged blackberries. Stir fried kale flavoured with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil, a few walnuts added. Served with salmon fillet baked in foil in the oven. Bit of the oatcake for afters.
The realisation that I have another seven days off after today.
The scent of a Yankee Candle wax tart in the living room (Fresh Cut Roses).
Changing my Lammas hearth decoration to the Mabon one because autumn is coming. Bright red and yellow artificial chrysanthemums, pillar candle, acorns, pine cones.
Sitting on the sun lounger in the garden, making the most of the subshine.
Senior cat in his usual spot under the hedge, junior cat under my sun lounger. Dog indoors in the hall. When my boy comes through that door in half an hour's time, she is going to go absolutely bananas.
One life - your life - live it!11 -
S Sue - good to hear from you. Glad that DH can still make his wishes known, and have them carried out. Hugs as always.
D Doll - there will be some good memories surface when you light those special candles.
Frith - sorry to hear about friend's mum. As you say, a difficult year for many.
Dfv - thoughts go out to you. It's always the little things, like dumplings, that trip us up. Written down, that sounds silly, but I hope you know what I mean. Love and hugs.
It's a good job there's a new pretty kitty to cheer us all up!
I've had a good day. Morning visit to DS and family, and first proper cuddle of new DGD. She is beautiful, of course, but was cross with me as she wanted feeding, not cuddling. I didn't take it personally!
Afternoon, DD and partner visited us, bearing cake. And it was very warm so we sat in the garden to eat it.
Evening we had a BBQ, followed by ice cream.
As I say, a good day all round. I feel blessed.
Happy evening everyone

Hello. Been a day at work. We were rather busy over lunch. And excellent tips today. All in the jars! The traveling child has left ( and reached her first destination, moves on tomorrow. Staying in a rather dodgy sounding hostel overnight) and the guest has left too ( hurrah for my living room back) and sent a lovely thank you message.Dinner was courtesy of work...I was peeling some spuds at work and said ‘this is going to sound odd but can I take the peels home?’ Of course so we had baked potato skins with chilli made from mince that was at its best by date in work fridge. So a free tea!The new bed arrived. Hurrah and the chaps put it all together and thank goodness for lovely local businesses. It’s very high and DD2 isn’t so much!I hung a washing out ( quite who the son thought was going to wash it and how it was going to dry when everyone else was out I don’t quite know) had a bit of a blow and I’ve just popped the heating on for half an hour. Starting to get dark at 8.30pm.Feeling more like my house is my own without others here. ( is that mean?) contented sigh!11
