Is it essential to have a BT line to sign up to O2? We don't have a landline in our house, and the current broadband connection was installed by Telewest. I've read on this thread O2 service is pretty good, plus I have a PAYG mobile which would make it even cheaper.

Anyone know what my options are?

Well you won't get O2 on a cable connection, so go for the BT line installation for £29.99 see here.

If it was £29,99 just for the connection that would be fine. However, you are tied in for 18 months, have to make 30 calls every three months, also there would be a line rental charge as well I would imagine. The reality is I just dont need a landline. Anyone have a link for cable only optoins?

Yes line rental on top - outrageous but a fact! Your only cable option is Virgin here but it's obviously not O2, which is flavour of the month.

Virgin is who I'm with at the moment, paying £18 a month for a 2 meg connection. It would be difficult to haggle the the cost down from what I'm paying at present If Virgin is my only option. Guess I'm stuffed!

It's not difficult at all because they would rather take some money off you each month rather than lose your custom. You should only be paying £10 per month like a lot of others are.

I'm just hoping they don't grow to the point where their service starts to suffer which is where 90% of all ISPs go wrong! Most isp's that started out being amazing, got a very large customer base very quickly and then annoyed them by raising contention ratios. (the ratio of number of people sharing the same line from your local exchange)

like ISP's seriously undercutting most other ISP's and offering heavier discounts for having a mobile contract with them to try and get a large customer base extremely quickly...doesn't sound like O2 does it.....;)

I have signed up for O2 broadband today. Here is my setup.

    1) New line installation with Line rental from Madasafish - GBP115+GBP9.99 per month. No connection fee.
    2) O2 broadband standard with O2 PAYG mobile discount - GBP 7.50 per month
    No connection fee.

My current status in o2 website is "Your line is eligible to receive O2 broadband.". Have not received the text message/email on go live date.
