O2 Broadband (merged)

I am currently with Madasafish and thinking of switching to O2.
My current speed is: download 3385 kbps, upload 271 kpbs.
I have the deal for 'up to 8 Mbps' paying £14.99 total per month.
Why are my speeds so much slower than O2?0 -
o2 uses adsl2. maaf is "old fashioned" adsl.
You have nothing to lose by giving it a try (o2 charge £12.50 (with £25 cashback from quidco) or £7.50 if you have an o2 contract /payg).
If it's not for you you can cancel after up to 50 days and get all your money back - then return to maaf if you want.0 -
Quentin,
I live in Maidstone, and need to wait for O2 to offer broadband here.
Do you have any idea when that might be?
Thanks for your info! I had no idea that MAAF still used the old ADSL.0 -
you may need to ask them to increase your SNR (noise margin). On Virgin you are on a fibre optic nework so noise interference is not involved. However, on a BT network you get noise from different sources, which are higher at night than during the day.
The network you are using is very sensitive to noise and if your SNR is set too low it will drop out. Increasing the margin overcomes this but you will get a drop in synch speed. You can get advice on these matters at hxxp://www.beforum.co.uk/forum/default.aspx there is an O2 forum on there.
Reference getting cut off. I was having this problem until last Tuesday phoned the ever helpful O2 Tech people - he increased this noise supression thingy slightly and it has solved the problem. Brilliant service 10 out of 10 O20 -

According to Samknows website, O2/Be LLU is set to be enabled at the Maidstone exchange on 30/06/2008:

Do check you're connected to that exchange though. Enter your phone number and postcode on the Broadband Availability Checker and you'll see the exchange you're connected to and all the services available to you.The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0 -
can someone please help me with this:
I have 02 bb and the line was activated yesterday.
i would like to put the 02 modem upstairs. however, i only have 1 phone socket, which is downstairs.
so i plug the filter directly into the socket, (thus giving me 2 putlets - 1 DSL and one phone outlet) right? problem is, I cant find a DSL cable that is long enough to connect from the filter to the modem upstairs.
is it possible to plug the filter into the phone socket, and plug one of those things which gives you two phone outlets, whereby i plug:
a phone at one outlet,
a phone extension cable at the other outlet, and 'pull' this cable to the upstairs room to connect the modem.
is this possible? and if i do this, do i need to plug another micro filter at the end of the extended phone line (to get a DSL outlet to connect the modem)?
i hope i am making sense.............
alternatively, can someone tell me where to get a 10 metre long DSL cable from?
thanks0 -
You can get long ethernet cable from most computer accessory type places. That would be better (regarding the bb connection speed) than using telephone extension wire.
But if you want to use an extension you can do as you describe.0 -
I concur, phone extension leads may affect your line stats (which could result in lower speeds and connectivity issues). Plug the router directly into the DSL socket on the microfilter attached to the BT phone socket downstairs and run a 10m ethernet cable from the router to your computer. The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0

No because the ADSL signal will never reach upstairs as you have filtered it at the main socket!

Yes but it won't work!

If you want to extend the connection, use a long Ethernet cable rather than a phone extension cable. e.g see here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Exactly what I did.
I used to have the router upstairs, and wondered why my speeds were so slow, using a standard BT extension cable,so I moved the router to within a few feet of my master socket, and got a 10m ethernet cable for to link to the main pc,and once I had done that,my speeds went up dramatically. That's my mutt in the picture above.0
