PowerPlay were meant to be picking up my laptop tomorrow morning (Monitor damaged - cup of tea!), but after reading the replies to this thread and a couple of other forums, I decided to call the insurance company back and express my concerns.
They've agreed to instead just offer me the cash value of the laptop at what it's worth to buy new now, which is perfectly acceptable to me. What was my £700 Dell laptop in November 2006 is now available for £399. The insurance company has kept £150 of this, but within an hour have transferred £249 to my account. I think this is worth not risking the hassle I've been reading about with PowerPlay.
Still, for £150, that cup of tea wasn't that good....0 -
How did you get powerplay to agree to not taking your laptop away for repair?
I would rather they do this with mine as it seems alot of hassle with them taking it away.
And i need to replace my laptop asap, as have work to do?

I had an accident with my camera, fortunately my insurance with L & G covered it. Since the the camera manufacturer had stopped producing cameras a few years ago I was offered a nearest replacement via Powerplay. Powerplay underplayed the camera specs and offered a lower model. I complained to the insurance company, along with supporting information from the web and I was quickly upgraded to a compatible model. On top of this I asked for a further upgrade at my cost and Powerplay obliged. New camera delivered within the week - excellent overall, after the haggle. Make sure that you have all the facts to support your claim is the moral of the story.0

to cut a long story short, powerplay sent back my "repaired" laptop which they had replaced the screen. when it came back it didn't work. they claimed that somebody had tampered with it after it had left them as a small screw had come loose inside and short circuited the motherboard, and that as it worked when it left them they were not prepared to fix it.
i objected and got nowhere, they passed it back to L & G who backed them 100% and accused me of damaging it, i complained and got no where.
eventually i complained to my FA and told them i would take it to the FSA, the odbudsmen and watchdog. She spoke to the area manager who listened to what had happened, and then queried with powerplay their version of the story, after much discussion powerplay ADMITTED they couldn't be sure how the damage had caused and it could have come loose in transit. so after 2 months they agreed to replace the unit as it was now unrepairable.
3 weeks later i'm still waiting for the replacement ! and according to dell it wil be another 2 weeks before i get it.
by the time i get this unit it will have been 3 and a half months since i raised my claim.
Powerplay - bunch of cowboys
L & G - not much better as i mistakenly thought they were my insurance company looking after me ? instead they looked after their buddies at powerplay.
thing is i don't even know if they did the original repair (damaged screen), as this machine has never worked since it came back, and they now have it again !0 -
Hi Andy,
I'm glad you have eventually got this resolved. They have in effect admitted there was a problem by arranging a replacement. What I would suggest you do once you have received the computer and checked its ok etc is to write send an executive complaint to the CEO of L&G (The address is in the back of the Policy Booklet). If you write a polite but firm letter explaining the distress and inconvenience this matter has caused they would normally make an ex gratia payment. This would normally be your policy excess or sometimes more. In addition it will raise the issue of the problems Powerplay have caused and may help prevent this happening to someone else in the future.0 -
I am getting a stolen laptop and desktop replaced from powerplay. The desktop was custom made and laptop was dell.
Do they just match the specs, or match the price you bought it for?
Also, is it likely that they will give you a pc with lower specs than you had?0 -

My custom build arrived at powerplay today. After Reading such forums as this I experssed concerned too my insurer. They told me that powerplay have to offer me like for like and that I can upgrade. I told them my intention of claiming a cash payout as I would be buying my new system from dabs, ebuyer, or overclockers. They told me I could do this but they would only pay out based on what value powerplay offer system wise. I'm going to reserve judgement on the company untill the claim process has ended. I'm hoping I am one of the lucky ones.
UPDATE - PP called today and have advied it's beyond economical repair. Also that their IT guys woulld be calling back with a like for like or better.
P.S. This took ages to type on an iPod touch.0 -
We have just had our 5 year old ibook G4 replaced by Powerplay via Halifax insurance.
I recommend not sending your machine to powerplay, but to send it to an independant engineer. We did this and obtained a detailed report that both Halifax and Powerplay have accepted.
Only issue is that Powerplay want to replace or laptop with a New/Old Stock machine which Apple have superceeded.
Powerplay will only cash settle at the "Heavily discounted rate" value of the machine that they offer. I our case the discounted value is £731 and, despite the fact Apple sell their new white Macbook for £18 more, Powerplay nor Halifax won't budge and pay us a bit more to get it.
At least it's better than what we had.0 -
do insurance companies offer like for like?
or look at how high-end the pc was at the time it was bought and try and match it to todays' standard.
What if someone speds £1000 on a laptop, then five years later, it gets stolen, will the insurers offer the crappiest laptop or oiffer a high-end laptop?0 -
On a lap top due to the constant improvements in performance and reduction in the cost they will offer you a current model that has a similar spec as the lap top they are replacing.
With a lap top they will not replace a top end model that is five years old with a top end current model as they do not need to unless lap top prices and performance stand still for the next five years which is very unlikely0
