    Hi,
Some good info on this thread.
Unfortunatley I dropped my laptop at the weekend and phoned the insurance co yesterday. They are sending out the paperwork but said they use Powerplay for assessment etc so will see what happens

I have "new for old" type cover but the laptop is old (circa 2000), I got it when I used to work for Compaq. It was expensive , around £900 I think, but I got a good one at the time so that it would last a number of years....which it has :T

Do the insurance co try to replace for similar spec , which would now be a bottom of the range no-name brand or would they look towards something well spec'ed to last a while without being outdated ?? (I suspect the former..)

Also I have asked for a fast decision as I am just finishing one OU course and then next one starts very soon !!
It will be kinda hard to do a programming course without my laptop :(

Thanks in advance for any advice, I will try and update my progress incase it helps anyone else.

  • I am glad I stumbled across this forum. I have a claim in with Zurich insurance for an almost brand new water damaged Ipod touch. I sent it off for repair and was told it was unrepairable, so contacted Zurich. After sifting through all my receipts, and reports, Zurich phoned to say that they were authorising replacement of my Ipod, and they would get Powerplay to contact me to collect the policy excess and replace the Ipod.

Surprise surprise, Powerplay phoned me today and have asked me to send all that info again, and send my Ipod Touch to them. They say they will examine it and decide what will happen about a replacement!

After reading about everyone's experiences on here, I decided to go back to Zurich and ask what they thought. They have advised me not to send the Ipod to Powerplay. They say that they have authorised the claim so Powerplay should not be asking for the Ipod. I have emailed Powerplay to tell them - will let you know what happens next....!
  • Perhaps as a former employee I can shed some light on some things for you guys.

I worked for the PC Team and our job was basically to save your insurance company as much money as possible by validating the cheapest laptop/pc possible with a matching spec (Brand was not a part of this).

The company flat out blows to work for they treat staff badly and offer a terrible wage considering the high income of the company, high stress of the job.

Also thos of you who have your computers collected should ensure you get your Hard Drive back (they will try and charge you for Data Recovery if this happens call your insurance company who can force them to send your HDD back for postage cost only)
Beyond economical repiar computers were stripped for parts and sold on it was never made clear to us if this included HDD's but i wouldnt put it past them.

If you have any questions let me know....

Sacked for being useless where you?

As for this thread, isnt it funny how many people "accidentally" drop or spill liquids on their laptops of a certain age
  • Ummmm no I could call them now and be working there again by this afternoon I was headhunted within the company to work for HBOS but eventually left for a much better job!!!!

I was one of the few poeple who were good at there job within the limits allowed by the company!

My Lloyds insurance is underwritten by Zurich - both have been excellent in dealing with my laptop claim - HOWEVER, I was sent to Powerplay to have the laptop fixed (simple cracked screen on a Toshiba Laptop).

Powerplay had the laptop for 5 weeks, in that time I have called and got fobbed off, telling me they were waiting for parts! This morning I called Zurich for their help - something which I advise anyone to do -call your underwriter and they will get it sorted! Appparently Powerplay broke the laptop while fixing it!!

    ...

ANYWAY - moral is complain to the underwriter, they seem to have more clout with them.

Too right... underwriter every time if you don't get anywhere with the actual provider.

I had a Toshiba laptop (when laptops were £2k) and paid for PC World's Coverplan insurance. One condition was "If we cannot repair your laptop within 6 weeks, we will provide you with a new laptop of the same specification or better"

6 weeks + 2 days after I took it back for repair they still did not have it for my collection. They wriggled. Coverplan (Cornhill Insurance I think it was) sent me back to the shop who I called and they said it will be back with us in 48 hours. "But you've had 6 weeks and 2 days, I want my new laptop" - "You can't sir, your repaired one will be here" (said the manager) - "No, I refer to the Ts & Cs and I will have my new one".

Called the underwiter and they were sympathetic and would look into it. Meanwhile got straight onto the Insurance Ombardsmen who agreed I was entitled to a new one. I told the underwriter this. They called me back in 30 minutes, "Coverplan are sending you vouchers for the full price of your laptop and vouchers for the 2 years of insuarnce you have credit for"

Hey presto, vouchers delivered by post for £2300!! Laptops had moved on a long way in the 14 months of ownership and I picked up a lovely model using the insurance rebate towards it. Obviously it's a brick of a machine nowadays but still works.

A week later got a call to say my repaired machine was ready for collection. :rotfl: Honest me; I explained it was not mine any more. I'm sure I could have had two laptops but would rather do the right thing... Crazy company, dunno how they are still running.

Always read the small print, always be honest and don't let them cheat you when you come to making a claim. And when you shop at Currys, Dixons or PC World, always refuse to give your name and address when buying something big. They'll often lie to you, saying that they need it for your guarantee which of course, under your statutory rights, they do not. Tell them to put whatever they like into their database. That way, you don't go onto their mailing list and get insurance offer letters later.

Laptop collected this morning and now on its way to powerplay. Photo's taken before it went.
HDD was intermittently not spinning up, managed to get it to spin up while connected to another system and wiped the disk (I have good backups).
I will hopefully find out within 10 days as to what will happen....
Still keen to find what the outcome will be as it is an old laptop but was still suitable for my needs (it was expensive when new for "futureproofing..")

As for this thread, isnt it funny how many people "accidentally" drop or spill liquids on their laptops of a certain age
I know what your saying but I am in the middle of my OU degree and could do without a dead laptop !!
  • AAMOI what became of this ?

I ask because I just had a mishap with my projector and my insurance company has told me that powerplay are going to call me and handle it !!

This has left me somewhat concerned. Anyone got any advice suggestions as to how I can avoid a fiasco that leaves me without a projector for several months (or worse, getting a lesser as a replacement !)

    Thanks in advance.
  • I was wondering if anyone out there has had to deal with Power Play on the replacement of camera's, lenses, flashes etc? I recently had a about £1400 worth of camera equipment stolen and all I have in the way of proof of ownership/purchase are two operating manuals for the cameras and a box for the flash gun. Nothing for my two lenses, bag, filters etc. Do you think I will run into problems with the claim because of this? Any help/feedback very much appreciated.
  • They just collected my base unit.

That won't work after a power surge, my insurance is with Barclays and they deal with Ival/Powerplay. Though reading these comments has unsettled me just a little! They gave me strict time scales (Ival that is) 5 Days to inspect it, If it can be repaired thats 14 days turn around. If It is beyond economical repair (Which I hope it is. As its has been running porley recently) Thats 6 Day turn around.

I have had another claim dealt with ival for a stolen mobile N96 and that was Fine so im hoping its the same with this one watch this space
