So I received the cheque a day late plus they also did not put a date on it. What would be the best steps to take?

My suggestion is to write a date on the cheque and take or send it to your bank.

Other ideas may well be available.

Personally I would send it back, (take a copy of the cheque), by post, (get proof of postage), with a covering letter; by the time it's dated, returned and eventually cleared at your bank, the 28 days may be up.
