I don't really understand tax credits. How do they calculate what you're due and how can they overpay you by such a big amount? Is it calculated every year? I've seen an awful lot of people from time to time saying they've been told they've been overpaid. It doesn't seem a very efficient system.Have adventures. laugh a lot and always be kind.0

I still don't understand how it works to be honest
I just knew we were expecting it as when he changed his job mid year his income nearly doubled (From PT min wage to full time at piece rate) So while at the beginning of the tax year his wages where low and we were entitled the income over the whole 12 months makes them first 5 months no longer entitled (I think!)0 -
Contest it and explain that your circumstances have changed etc. They may cut it down or wipe it out or chase him for it...BUGGRITMILLENIUMHANDANDSHRIMP I TOLD EM! - Foul Ole Ron
It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you do not know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going. If you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.

I think I see but I don't understand that when the income increased why the tax credits weren't adjusted accordingly. I take the tax credits are paid to you and not to him?Have adventures. laugh a lot and always be kind.0

You're no liable for all of it because it's a joint claim you're both liable so I would phone tax credits and say you are taking responsibility for half of it set up a payment plan with them and the other half they will chase your ex for as I've been in that situation before xxNEXT TARGET: Halifax credit card DEC 22 £0 / £4499.12POAMAYC 2011 £6378.35 POAMAYC 2012 £5000.78POAMAYC 2013 £3480.04 POAMAYC 2014 £4085.14POAMAYC 2015 £7565.24 POAMAYC 2016 £8000.90 POAMAYC 2017 £7278.80 POAMAYC 2018 £13208.18POAMAYC 2019 £13309.28 POAMAYC 2020 £15026.050

That's frustrating about the tax credits
Good idea from Abba about letting them chase OH for half of it.
If they are just automatically taking them back from your current award, I wouldn't add it to your debt, I'd just adjust your SOA to account for the lower income.
I find audiobooks great at night for stopping all the 'thinking'. It gives me something to concentrate on and I just go back to sleep. You can get free ones online, or get a free trial for audible and just cancel. You can keep the free book.
Do you have any car boot sales or nearly new sales in your area? I get lots of my kiddies clothes from them."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -

Last time that happened here the water board had to provide free bottles of drinking water. Ask and tell them that you have three little children.Have adventures. laugh a lot and always be kind.0
