It's fine though. They sell nice cake.

Matter of opinion, I'm not keen on their cakes.

No I have 'I don't get het up over a bag but not enough to not buy special cake' issues...

    I also don't call cashiers thick because I can't afford 5p

MNS only provide they type of bags that the law covers. That is all the cashier needs to know. They can't give you a free bag because they don't have paper ones
Or sweetie bags with no handles (?!)

I didn't say the cashier was thick, maybe reread the post?

You didn't say if you understand the legislation and that they could provide bags without charging for them and that therefore they weren't being honest in saying they couldn't?

It wasn''t just the cashier though, I contacted their customer service and said their staff were giving out incorrect information and they still insisted that the legislation is that all bags have to be paid for and that just isn't true.

I used to work for M&S so I feel disappointed that they are so different to the company they were. I like honesty, might not bother others we are all different.

The bags they supply require to be paid for,no?
Thankfully as is often the case,Scottish law is far clearer.

I refused to pay for a bag at Marks. Fair enough they can charge but they said it was because they had to, it was the law, I pointed out they could have paper bags, like they used to, or small bags without handles and not charge. Oh no they said all bags have to be 5p charge. I emailed them and suggested that if they want to charge 5p a bag they should just be honest about it and not lie by saying it was the law. Think I got someone a bit thick as they didn't seem to understand.

I avoid them now except for a particular cake my husband loves and I don't buy a bag.

You're calling people thick because you want to make a fuss over a bag.

All the bags Marks and Spencer carry need to be charged for.

The fact you emailed in because you want them to provide different bags and/or train their staff better in explaining this to customers who make a fuss speaks volumes about you and how much time you have on your hands.

    Over 5p.

How much time of your own and other people's have you wasted over that 5p?

I didn't waste 5p as I didn't buy the bag. You seem to make things up as you go along.

My complaint was they weren't being honest. They are entitled to stock whatever bags they like, they can charge what they like but having made that decision they shouldn't blame the government for their decision.

As I said before honesty might not matter to some people but personally I don't like being lied to.

You still haven't said if you understand the legislation.

My husband is disabled so if he loves that cake I will get it for him but I won't buy anything for myself from them. Hope that helps you to understand.

If your husband wanted a 5p bag from M&S would you get that for him? Or do your conflicted principles only extend to cake?
