I think you missed my point, I don't object to paying 5p for a carrier bag, I object to being lied to and told a small bag without handles also has to be charged for when that isn't true.

MNS don't provide those types of bags!

The only type of bags they have are ones which they have to charge for!

Why don't you understand this? They also don't have to charge for a small elderly chap to take it home for you, but they don't provide that so it's irrelevant to the customer AND the cashier!

Does that not depend on how crispy the underwear is?

I can't comment on your underwear but mine wouldn't and I don't think M&S sell underwear that would but as I don't buy it anymore I suppose I have to accept that they might sell crispy underwear now.

They choose what types of bag to provide, they told me they can't provide free bags because of the legislation. They either lied or they don't understand the legislation.

Your posts are incredibly aggressive. Have you got anger management issues?

The small bags used to be free. The LAW is that they HAVE to charge for small one use bags. Is that clear enough now?!

They used to be free when Marks and Spencer 'chose' to charge for their larger bags. No law.

They ARE being honest and they're treating you like a fool... because... well I'll let you work that out. They don't have to supply paper bags because you want one for your special cake.

I've given you the link, do you understand that the law isn't that all small one use bags have to be charged for?

No I have 'I don't get het up over a bag but not enough to not buy special cake' issues...

    I also don't call cashiers thick because I can't afford 5p

MNS only provide they type of bags that the law covers. That is all the cashier needs to know. They can't give you a free bag because they don't have paper ones
Or sweetie bags with no handles (?!)

The legislation states when bags have to be paid for, M&S lied to me and said all bags have to be paid for. You don't have to pay for paper bags, you don't have to pay for bags without handles, you don't have to pay for bags that have been used (which was relevant to me as I was picking up an item from customer services and they had a box of old carriers that had been returned with goods and they insisted they had to charge for them as well.) There is nothing to stop M&S charging for bags but they shouldn't lie to customers. How can you trust a business that deliberately and repeatedly lies to you?

It's fine though. They sell nice cake.

Buy your plants from B&M Bargains. They are a fraction of the price and have a wide range, often reduced, too.

Someone, the other day, was complaining on Facebook about Macdonalds wanting to charge for a paper bag to carry his takeaway to his car, so he refused and asked for a tray....which he kept.

Charging for carriers at supermarkets does appear to have reduced the use of bags, but there doesn't appear to be any evidence, yet that pollution has been affected.

The law has given some companies an excuse to charge more for a product by having a carrier levy and making such as clothing shops charge is ridiculous, as you can't just put a new dress/shirt etc in a regular shopping bag ,so do need a special bag as part of the purchase.

The cashier chose their words poorly (they are a cashier, not company PR or law dept)
They have to charge as their employer has told them to.
Law or not,you would be paying anyway. I have no doubt if the employee told you it was company policy, you would be mumping on this thread the same.
Semantics, pure and simple. You have put a fair bit of effort into this thread on a company you arent using (except the obvious disabled/cake caveat)

It wasn''t just the cashier though, I contacted their customer service and said their staff were giving out incorrect information and they still insisted that the legislation is that all bags have to be paid for and that just isn't true.

I used to work for M&S so I feel disappointed that they are so different to the company they were. I like honesty, might not bother others we are all different.
