M&S charging for bag for plants to go in

I was going to buy some petunia plants on Friday , got to the till and because their normal flower bag would have caused problems ,the assistant was told to use a cake bag. They couldn't understand why I refused to pay for a bag, which according to gov. site bags for flowers and plants should be exempt.
In the end I didn't buy the plants and have now vowed not to shop there again.

It was bad enough finding lots of out of date foods on their shelves all the time.

They can charge for a bag if they wish. It's just they aren't legally required to.

Then, like anything that a retailer has for sale, you can either accept their offer or decline (as you did in this case).

That is why {for many years prior to the bag charge coming in} I have always carried a few bags with me when I go out. That way I can use my own bags and shop in any place.;)

We always ask if the customer wants a bag or tray for our plants. Free of course. Friend with a florists has to pay to get their trays taken away so she just drops them in and we give to customers. We do charge for empty compost bags however but the money goes into the St Michaels (charity)box.

I refused to pay for a bag at Marks. Fair enough they can charge but they said it was because they had to, it was the law, I pointed out they could have paper bags, like they used to, or small bags without handles and not charge. Oh no they said all bags have to be 5p charge. I emailed them and suggested that if they want to charge 5p a bag they should just be honest about it and not lie by saying it was the law. Think I got someone a bit thick as they didn't seem to understand.

I avoid them now except for a particular cake my husband loves and I don't buy a bag.

As M&S donate all of the money from the sale of plastic bags to charity, (after the government have taken their cut) they wouldn't have made any profit from your 5p so there was nothing in it for them for charging.

So despite shopping there on a regular basis, you have decided to cut off your nose to spite your face over a plastic bag!

You shouldn't have edited "should" to be "could."

The OP was referring to the law in this instance, not a retailers right to charge for almost anything they want to charge for.

So, you avoid them but you don't actually avoid them? Well done for standing up to those corporate tyrants!

I bet some companies have parties when they see some of their "not all that desired" customers venting on here saying they will never go back again lol
