At my lowest, I found anti-depressants just meant I didn't cry... there was a lot to cry about, mostly not financial.
The mortgage being gone is one less burden for you. The nightmare client's power is still overwhelming. Maybe cutting your losses would cut their power?
Gentle hugs xxWhat would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?5 -
Thank you all for your comments. I would absolutely love to just draw a line under that client but, for various complex reasons, I can’t. I need to protect myself professionally and reputationally.
yesterday little was done though I did have a lengthy chat with ds and a briefer one with dd. I also took my gp’s advice, now that my back has eased, and went for a walk. DH came too but may not in the future as, he has catlike tendencies and did not appreciate the wind and the rain.He did get 3 items on eBay which is good.Today I need to address some work, pick up a birthday present from a bakery across town for my sister and meet a former colleague for coffee. At least there is an outline to the day.
today I am grateful for

Congratulations on clearing the mortgage and the weight loss.
With nightmare client hanging over you it's not surprising you don't feel like celebrating.

Unexpectedly and without comment, the nightmare paid. The cheque had been signed two months ago so, on the advice of a friend, I hotfooted to the bank. Her concern was that someone new put it in the post having seen it sitting signed and ready to go. When this is discovered, it may be stopped but in a day or two, it’ll be beyond that. While I was in the branch, I formally closed my mortgage paying the outstanding £48 interest. It’ll take a few weeks for the deeds to be delivered to branch and then we will pay to have these released. Charges are £160 a year for bank to retain, £50 to collect in person or £75 to be sent to a solicitor plus their charges. I have a £20 big river voucher so plan on getting fire proof storage and going with the £50 option though I’d welcome thoughts on this. The joy hit a small bit yesterday as I left the bank. I then worked out that even without the unanticipated money, I could still have done it before my birthday so something achieved.Today is dh’s weekly office based day so I will be productive. We are at a play tonight which I’m not particularly looking forward to but may see people I like there.Today I am grateful for

If registered completely pointless in paying for storage. If not (unusual but possible) consider a voluntary first registration,. More up front put then peace of mind. I think you are NI so just checking I'm right...

Northern Ireland is different but I expect the same principles. Sorry, you need more local specific advice4

Hurray to payment from Nightmare (ex)Client - no matter what the circumstances of the cheque arriving, and yes it was best to bank it immediately.
Hurray to being mortgage-free. Some years ago there was a school of thought that said clear everything except the last £1 of the mortgage, to avoid the exit fees. What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?4 -

Pleased the nightmare ex client has paid.
Great news to be mortgage free and the fact that you could have been without the unanticipated money.
Don't lose sight of the fact that YOU made that happen

Two lots of good news at once - well done! Even better that you were on track to paying off the mortgage by your birthday. You will always have that achievement.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
