Apart from the lack of interest from Microsoft and PayPal on this (so much for their strong stance against software piracy!), this issue brings up a question over the trustwortyness of Amazon.

I personally have found that it is sometimes confusing as to what products are sold by Amazon and those sold by 3rd parties.

It seems to be becoming a bit of a free for all, a la Ebay - but at least you know what you are getting into with Ebay!

Amazon need to have a serious look at this issue.

I think I've missed something, what have Amazon got to do with this? They haven't sold any pirated software, nor have their 3rd party sellers AFAIK.

Do keep up, yes you have missed something, read the Opening Post - Amazon had and still have - the company in question as a sponsored link on their website- I emailed them about this weeks ago - got a vague reply.

I assume what the OP means is that when you search for a product on amazon it lists products sold by amazon and those sold by market place sellers. It only tells you who it's dispatched by when you click through the link in the top right corner, and it's not that obvious and not something you're immediately drawn too (well they do say that).

I read on another forum recently (yesterday infact) of people buying Sennheiser headphones off marketplace for them to turn out to be fakes (just an example).

I think it's reasonably clear whether the item is sold by Amazon or not (for the items I looked at anyway).
Against "Availability" and above the "Add to shopping basket" button it says:
"Dispatched from and sold by xxxxxx"

I did see that but a sponsored link is a very very different thing from their third party sellers. You haven't actually contradicted my statement that neither Amazon nor their third party sellers are actually selling the software.

They're very clearly labelled sponsors, nobody could ever confuse it for being Amazon, and they quite clearly state they are external websites that don't fall under their buying protection and guarantees. There's absolutely no difference here at all between Amazon and Google.

  • Pleased to have found this thread. I was only really wanting to buy Outlook 2007 after using a trial version of Office Small Business for a few weeks. I couldn't believe the Existoftware offer for Office professional.

I thought there may be a catch and alarm bells sounded when there was no address on the web site, something that is a legal requirement for a UK business. There was also a "review" dated May 2007 when the home page states that the business was started in August 2007.

Have now found that you can buy a licence from Microsoft for all or parts of the trial program at much lower rates than Amazon. For example Outlook is £43.93 ((plus £8.21 for a back-up cd) as opposed to Amazon's price of £85.48. Maybe converting a trial version of other office products may be a cheaper option of buying legitimate MS software.

Depending on eligibility there are perfectly legal ways of getting MS software much cheaper. If you work for the NHS, are a student, teacher, even your company may have an MS scheme you can get them really cheap or even free. But no retailer can offer a digital download of MS Office, only directly from MS. So it absolutely has to be illegal.

Further to what has been said previously, I don't know if this is a suitable option but ......

Microsoft Office Student Edition seems to have become MS Office 2007 HOME and Student Edition.

It contains, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote and typically retails for approx £81.

    Including from Amazon ....

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Office-2007-Student-Licence/dp/B000HCZ8EO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/026-6580910-9264429?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1194357769&sr=8-1

But, best of all that is for a LEGAL 3 user licence!! So laptop and home pc....

    P.S. Is OneNote actually useful?

If you are a student then you can get Office Ultimate which contains Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, Outlook (with contact business manager), Access, Infopath, Publisher, Groove, which retails for something like £600 for only £39. I believe the licence (full retail) allows you to use on laptop and pc.
